Wonder what this RIP round will do when it hits a bone like if you aim center mass on a human. I've seen hunting rounds designed to do what this round does with its fragmentation and they splash on bones. Berger HPs, Vmax and some others are known for hitting shoulders of coyotes an splashing making a mere flesh wound. I would think this round would do the same if you hit the sternum of a human.

I'd say even "splashing" on a human will incapacitate them for, at a minimum, a follow up shot. Especially if you are talking rib/sternum shot.

I'm pretty big but I have no delusions of grandeur that a coyote is MUCH tougher than I am.

You have to remember I'm an old guy, I haven't carried in an official capacity since the 80's, long before the Los Angeles shootout where the bad guys were covered in armor and carried assault rifles, and before the Miami shootout, where the agents were shot because they were policing their brass during the shoot out.  BOP in 2002 issued and I carried FMJ, the policy was a non-lethal response, hence the fmj.  Allot changed in law enforcement after the two incidents I gave, before I was trained in non-lethal response, the goal was to stop the bad guy not necessarily end their life.

gotcha, I thought you might have been talking pre LA/Miami.

I wasnt trying to draw any point of contention. I should have asked, instead of stated.

from the videos I have seen it does not look like the frags penetrate deep, though the "center disk" goes about 16 inches. I say not very deep, I am comparing to "FBI spec" of 12in minimuim.

that said, wouldnt want to be shot with it, but dont want to carry it either.

One of our clients is the warden for the local penitentiary.  I think he said it best.

I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

I am a little on the fence about this round honestly.  For home defense, sure why not.  For personal carry, NOPE.  Think about the fragmentation and the chance for innocent bystanders to be hit.  Part of being a responsible gun owner/carrier is knowing you can safely hit your target, and this round spreads out and splinters so bad, I think it has the potential to be dangerous.

Jeff

I don't get down here as much as I should...

Anyhow, I've seen this round, first hand, finally.  I actually got to fire some of them as well.

I'm not at all concerned, as I was just like you, about the collateral aspect of it.  The thing won't fragment until penetration.  After that, it stops pretty quickly, at least that's what we noticed.

All that being said- DRT has a new frangible handgun round that is devastating with ZERO pass through.  It does absolutely insane damage to a soft target but then falls apart in a hurry.  Should look into that one.
