BassCats Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 To those of you who use Quantum reels: What model is your favorite. I am thinking of getting one to try out. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 Smoke SL100HPT. I use it for pitching/punching because it has a stock ceramic drag and it's extremely light. I love it to be honest, great little reel. If you look on ebay, you can find these reels for next to nothing. Perhaps I got a gem, but I've never had any issues with mine. Some people just frown on Quantum but I have yet to experience any bad with mine. I also have a lower end KVD reel that has been a good reel. No complaints and I use it for lipless, squarebills, things like that. It's smooth and casts really nice. Plastic parts worry me though so I don't expect the reel to be a "lifetime" investment. I treat my stuff really well so after 2.5 seasons with it, it's in 9/10 shape both mechanically and cosmetically. I have never tried any EXO's but feedback says they're solid. The rest of my reels are all Shimano. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 Quantum Tour KVD Burner ~ You could use the TW Demo program to try out a reel. Also TW is offering this reel at a very reasonable price right now. Here's a decent review. http://www.***.com/quantum-kvd-burner-baitcaster-reel-review/ A-Jay 1 Quote
Grantman83 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 The smoke was a decent reel compared to the others I've used. All aluminum and a strong drag. Only issues where the cast control was iffy and the side plate is d**n near impossible to take off 2 Quote
coak Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I personally like the older Tour Editions. I have a KVD Tour but have yet to take it out. Even though the older TE's may be a little on the heavier side I feel that they balance rods nicely and are a real work horse of a reel. I'd like to try a smoke as well. The thing to remember with higher end Quantums is that the ACS braking system does have a learning curve and not to get frustrated with it but to practice until you have it dialed in nicely. I'm not a brand snob at all, but I do feel that in this forum particularly Quantum doesn't get enough 'love'. That may be because of their lower end stuff though. I would not recommend getting any of the low end stuff. You can find some of the older Energy Pt's for around $99 if you look hard and those used to retail for $189 if I'm not mistaken. I personally would not chance it with anything below the Energy model. Just my $.02 though 2 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 FWIW I see more than a fair share of Smokes with loud, rough gears. The older TE's seemed more solid to me as well. Quote

Super User CWB Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 Smoke SL150HPT in 7.3:1. Smooth and casts a mile with wider spool. Only 6.8 OZ. and fits my hand like it was made for it. Love the external brakes. 1 Quote
Christian M Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I echo what has been said above. I own the last models of HPT TE 7.0:1 reels before they became the KVD reels and it's my absolute favorite reel next to my Smoke SL100HPT. I also own 2 Code reels and as long as I keep up with maintenance, they are workhorses. I even own a lower end Nitro that I use for top-water fishing and I really can't complain about it. The Higher end reels are definitely the way to go and I agree that Quantum doesn't get enough love. IMHO for the price a lot of their reels can't be beat. I think the case with the Smokes is that they need to be lubed before you use them. When I bought my Smoke reel it screamed, but I brought it home, put some hot sauce in it, and haven't had a problem since. 3 Quote
mjseverson24 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I do have some quantum reels, I have not tried the smoke reels but they seem very nice, I have the kinetics, energy, and catalysts and I really like all of them. No issues from these reels at all. I like how they are aluminum on both the frame and gear side cover. most brands you have to get well up over the 150 range to get that feature. Mitch 2 Quote
Super User MCS Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 Just picked a closeout model energy pt vi 7.0 burner. Been using it for a month and love it. Looking to purchase another. My buddy has the crazy color energy and no issues there. So far they have been great in my book. 1 Quote
Super User MCS Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 You can catch smokes on sale at Walmart they were running the $199 model for $159 and last I saw they are running the $219 for $179. The older energy's are on closeouts as well KVD models. Look around for good deals. 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 I have 4 light weight reels, a Lews Tourney Pro, an Abu Garcia Revo Premier 2nd generation, and a Smoke 150 HPT and a Smoke 100 SPT. I find I like the Smoke 150 HPT the best, the cast control works really well for me, they should use that ACS 3 on all of their reels. That is the one I would go with, the Smoke 100 is a good reel too but I do prefer the 150 because of the braking system. 1 Quote
Stingray23 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I only use Quantum(over 20 yrs) and I use TE and Energy PT. Zero issues. love them. 2 Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 The only current model quantums worth owning are the KVD Tour reels. All of the others are plagued with issues. Whether it is in the gearing, or bearings, or side plate issues like the EXO. I used to fish, nearly exclusively, Quantum reels. Now, however, they're under built, over priced, and just now worth the hassle and headache. 1 Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 1, 2014 Super User Posted February 1, 2014 I have an iron 130 I used for my plug knocker, works great Quote
AQUA VELVA Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Any thoughts on the Quantum Kinetic & the new Accurist PT baitcasters? They are both in the same price range, about $100. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 19, 2014 Super User Posted February 19, 2014 I've got an Exo and I really like it although the bearings seem a little loud compared to my other reels. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I have several Quantum PT models and have not had any issues with any of them at this time. I have the color shift Energy PT, Kinetic PT, a couple of the Accurist PT 501 and the gray red model prior to this latest Accurist. I also have a couple of the KVD PT models in the 101SPT and 101HPT models but haven;t had them on the water just yet. My favorite out the group I own is the Quantum Accurist 101HPT burner reel that I use for flipping and pitching. I actually had 3 of these reels but lost one overboard right before purchasing another. The previous reel and the current Accurist were upgraded with some internal polishing and upgraded bearings. The reel was always in my hands and never had a problem before losing it and the current model is back on a flipping/pitching rod and ready for the season. Quote

Cgrinder Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I have a Smoke that I really like for some things. I'm not a big fan of the braking. It feels like the choice is either no brakes or all the brakes. However for things like 1/2 oz traps or pike spoons, it is one heck of a caster. Nice and light, too. Quote
AQUA VELVA Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Just out of curiosity, do drag washers ever need any kind of cleaning or maintenance? Quote
Wbeadlescomb Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I've got a few of the quantum accurist's can't remember the model 500 maybe. The red blue and yellow. Stock piled several when I worked at academy 10+ Years ago. They are awesome reels the ones I just retired were 8-9 years old and still going strong. I've got a couple of the 570pt's the light grey ones from the same era I just spooled up tonight. I've got one of the rainbow colored quantum pt's I swim jigs with I bought when the classic was at lay a few years ago,two of the grey energy's,two grey accurist pt's the only exception's are of one of the lews speed spools I bought last week and 4 shimano citicas I bought at the classic today for $60 bucks it's all quantum and I'd still fish quantum but the newer accurist feel cheap. Tom H. Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I like the 3 smokes that I have and plan on picking up another one soon. Can't say I've had a problem with any of mine. I also have a bunch of older Q's that I can still break out and use. Proper maintenance is all it takes to have a reel last forever. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I hope this doesn't become the case with mine. I'll be going on my 3rd season with mine and its still like new. Any idea of why they've come to that state? Too much or too little grease can cause gears to wear faster than usual. Quote
