bartdude186 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 This has prob been discussed before but.... i fish a small lake with 0 shad population and obviously no trout around here. i know there are 10lb+ bass in the lake, i have caught plenty or 6+ pound fish.i'm not sure what swimbait to throw, the lake is loaded with catfish and i was thinking about trying a 6 or 8 inch catfish swimbait. any suggestions? if i use the typical big bass baits such as a jig or bigger cranks i cant keep the 1-3 lbers off my line long enough to fish for a trophy, don't get me wrong, i love catching the 1-5 pound fish all day but i want to go after some more of the big girls this spring. the lake is pretty deep for a small lake mostly 15-25 feet deep, with one small cove closer to 10 and the east bank that is 4-10ft. water clarity in the spring is normally 3-5 feet. Any advice appreciated! Quote
RyneB Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 mattlures makes a catfish swimbait. Get yourself a weedless Huddleston 68 special for sure. If you don't want to spend the $ on those $20 range baits. You can get a pack of the big Strike King shadalicious hollow bodies and throw them around. A Lunker Punker and MS Slammer would also do you well. That's a good start. The big time swimbait guys will chime in im sure. Im just a novice. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 I'd second the Hudd 68. Just because there aren't any trout in there doesn't mean they won't eat one if it "swims" across the front of their face (trout baits work well at Clear Lake despite the absence of trout there). If you drop some gold fish into a bass tank they'll destroy them regardless if they've ever seen them before. Just something to think about... Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 Hudd 68, Mattlures, MS Slammer, SWaver, Glide Swimmer, Bull Shad- SPRO BBZ. They'll all catch fish. There are no trout in TX, but Fork fish eat Hudds and Triples. Quote
basshole8190 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I have a long list of baits i throw but they may not be right for you. Most bigger swimbaits require a heavy rod capable of handling up to 5oz for most smaller 6-7" baits also a 300 sized casting reel to hold enough line to effecively fish the bait. my suggestion for lures would be 6-7" triple trout used for when yould normally fish crankbaits or rattle baits. a glide like the savage gear glide swimmer or river to sea s waver when youd fish a jerkbait or fluke. a mattlures hard gill or g2 shellcracker by blackdog baits when the forage is mainly panfish. ahudd or similar jig hook soft bait when you'd fish a jig or texas rig. be warned though the swimbait world is addicting. also 2 lb fish also will eat these baits from time to time but the smaller bites will decrease some. Its not for everyone. most people see the pics of big fish and want the same results but you dont see the countless fishless hours of chucking those big baits or the frustating followers that dont commit. My advice get a few baits to cover the water column and stick to those for awhile to make sure u like it before you jump head first in and spend a lot of money on something u end up not liking Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 1, 2014 Global Moderator Posted February 1, 2014 I'll bet there's bluegill in there for sure. Mattlures U2, ultimate, or hardgill would all be good options, as would one of his catfish or baby bass baits since there's obviously bass in there. The River 2 Sea S-Waver would be another good option along with a MS Slammer. There's very few lakes with trout in KS but I've caught plenty of bass on trout colored Hudds. I catch plenty of bass on shad colored baits in lakes with no shad also. Quote
gobig Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Bottom line is that bass eat fish or anything that resembles them. Are there a lot of weeds or snags and are you fishing from the bank? A little more info would help for suggestions. Quote
bartdude186 Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 Thanks for all the suggestions guys, and as for weeds and snags, no weeds are in the lake until about June and i don't plan to fish them once they come in because anything with an exposed hook is a pain. And also i fish on that lake mainly from my kayak. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted February 22, 2014 Super User Posted February 22, 2014 try the 8" triple trout cut tail, floater. I've seen 6lb bass try and eat a 10-12" bass off a hook, an 8" swimbait is fair game and an easy meal for a big bass. Check out the Southern Trout Eater's DVD and look at some of the lakes they fish that don't have trout but eat the triple trout and MS Slammers. Also look at Kopper's makes a bluegill wakebait that may get their attention Quote
