I recently came across a video showing how to use bobber stops on your drop shot rig, instead of tying a palomar knot to attach the hook.

The rig is tied by first adding two bobber stops, then your hook, then another two bobber stops to your mainline. I guess the idea is that two bobber stops above and below will create more resistance and keep the hook in place. At the end of your main line you tie on  a barrel swivel, with a short leader and the weight on the other side. The distance from the swivel to the weight should be the shortest distance at which you want to present the bait off the bottom.

The idea is you can quickly adjust your bobber stops to change the depth of your bait, instead of retying. Plus the hook can spin free on the line, not creating as much twist.

Having yet to try this, I think that the bobber stops would easily slide when you apply pressure to set the hook.

Have any of you guys tried it this way?

Thanks,

Josh

I never used it but it's worth playing with.  I would be concerned about the hook sliding too much when trying to set the hook.  This could be minimized with a light wire hook and making sure it's extra sharp.

Only way to know for sure is to try it.

I'm down to test it once I get water to fish again.

It's easier to just adjust the sinker, and more reliable.

Very interesting concept, but I'll be honest, I don't seem to adjust the length from my hook to weight all that much.  I'll usually start longer and slowly shorten (i.e., cut line and retie weight) if need be.  If I am catching fish with where it is at, it doesn't get changed.  Thanks for posting, though.  I always like new ideas.

I use the bobber stops on a T-rig so that way I can peg my weight or not.And I put a bobber stop ahead of the weight and ten another behind the bead so now I can turn my T-rig into a C-rig by ajusting my bobber stops and the weight ! Cool stuff.

When you go to the Carolina set-up, would the back bobber stop be enough to hold the weight away from the lure during the cast?  I would think that the weight would push against the stop and overcome the coefficient of friction that the stop has with the line and slowly make its way back to the lure.  Do you find that to be the case?

I have been fish this setup for along time. And I have had very little problems, I fish alot of deep water and if I have a 3/4 to 1oz. weight, I just try to cast not as hard or a side arm cast.It does not slid very often!

How    would using a bobber stop or two at the end of the line to keep the weight on work . I  think  that would keep   a regular bullet weight on the line but stilll pull off is snagged . Maybe a simple overhand knot   tied on the end may make it more secure . I have never drop shotted but have contemplated it and would just  improvise with what   I already have .

Yeah, I do it with the hook sandwiched between two stoppers so it sticks straight out. I do tie a uni under the bottom stop, I just don't like the idea of the hook slipping down , even though in most cases it wouldn't matter.  a

Interesting experiences.

Edit: I've re-read this thread, and my setup is not

the same. I only use TWO bobber stops, one above

the hook, one below the hook.

Then I tie on a drop shot weight at the end. Simple,

very effective, and works like a champ. No problems

with it at all in salt and fresh water. I use thin/narrow

bobber stops I got off Amazon, not the bulbous ones

you buy at Bass Pro.

Got the idea from Gary Senft.

Too much going on for me.  I use the KISS system.  #1 EWG hook tied with a palomar and then the tag end run back through the hook eye (always stands straight out) and a premium dropshot weight (Quick Drop) that has a quality harp.  No swivels, leaders or extra knots for me.

What bobber stops are you guys using that give a good grip on thin (like 7-8lb floro) line?  I can't even really find ones that hold super well on 12lb floro, nothing I have tried will work at all on thinner line.

If you re-read my post, and check the video, you'll see my

setup is different. Works great with 6lb fluoro.

I use these bobber stops:

So I think we have had this conversation before.  The question now is, "where on earth did they end up, if they even got delivered at all?"

I know I mentioned it in another thread, LOL. Hope you

can find what happened to them!

Tried it last year.....failed miserably!

I tried it, and liked the concept, but I couldn't get enough resistance from the two bobber stops to get a good hookset.  Could be the bobber stops is was using were not strong enough though.

Doesnt seem like a good idea to me.  Ill stick with my palomar knot that ive never had an issue with.
