Daiwa Tatula Priced So Much Cheaper?

How come on Amazon and Ebay the Tatula is selling for around $100 brand new but MSRP is around $140 and $150.  Most other reel companies are a little bit closer to MSRP than that.  Is their not good resale value on Daiwas?

I was looking for a ***, and couldn't find a site that sold them less for $99.. I was hoping I could at least find $70 somewhere.

I don't think that's too out of line. A lot of Quantum, Pflueger, Lews, Shimano, etc. are all priced $40-$50 below retail on Ebay. I don't know if the Tatula has a good resale or not, because very few people sell them after they get their hands on them.

MSRP = manufacturers suggested retail price

It doesn't mean it's set in stone. Ask $150 and sell 100 reels or ask $100 and sell 400 reels.

Most of the time manufacturers set the retail price and dealers are required to sell products at that price.  That's why when TW has a sale certain brands are excluded.  I don't know what the penalty is for breaking that agreement with the manufacturer but the people on Ebay and Amazon clearly don't care.

A lot of times retailers run sales that exclude certain brands but have notes that say call for deals we cannot advertise.. sometimes it is in you benefit to make the phone call i have lucked out a couple times with some awesome customer service people. 

 

The Tatulas are priced cheaper around in part because of their proposed high margins. One of the reps was talking about it in one of their preview videos leading up its release. It seems like it is working out well for them and the end user because if they are making more money on high sales numbers and the retailers are still making somewhat of a profit giving customers a sale. I believe it is called marginal utility theory if my college econ is still embedded in my head somewhere lol.

There's a difference in MSRP and MAP.  Shimano and Daiwa, as well as most other fishing industry companies, do not have MSRP, they technically are defined as a minimum advertised price.  In doing so, the dealer is also subject to the clause that, should they sell reels or equipment under MSRP or MAP, such as the case may be, they are in violation of that dealer agreement.  There are instances in which there are special considerations made with some retailers, but it's a rare thing.

The reason you tend to see it occuring on Fleabay and Amazon is that those are not dealers.  They are people that have bought them through a wholesale account, and are turning volume to turn a buck.  In most cases, too, it tends to be a one shot deal.  Sometimes, it is a wholesale outfit blowing through inventory, or it is a retailer selling then placing the order with a wholesaler.  There are a variety of reasons that this occurs and a variety of situations that it can happen with.  Most of those, as well, have really been curtailed by the fact that few wholesale accounts are allowed access to entire product lines.  It's become more and more rare to see upper mid-range reels through these companies.  *** is rare to see because they don't have wholesale accounts.  They are the wholesaler to the retailer; there generally is not enough mark-up for another hand in the mix, if you will.

Lastly, as well, some of these reels may not be covered by warranty.  If it doesn't come from an authorized retailer- you're out.

There is no problem with the Daiwa Tatula's other then I can't keep them on the shelf.  You don't have to support those sites to get a good price on gear.  I sell the tatula all day everyday at about 20% off MSRP.   I can't advertise that but if you add it to your cart you will see a discount.  Like Hooligan said many of the sellers on those sites are not authorized dealers or are stolen items.  There is a reason you don't see advertised discounts on a lot of gear.  As mentioned already in this thread,  It's called MAP pricing.  I have explained this several times on BR but if you missed those posts and don't know what it is go to this link http://www.beatthebigboxboys.com/whatismap/ and read about what it is.  Then maybe you will understand pricing.
