mathnerdm Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 So I'm looking to buy a cheapo(ish) spinning rod and reel for just hook and worm fishing. I plan to use it for panfish and small creek bass. With that in mind, I also would prefer for the rod to be an ultra light, I want to have the fun of every bass feeling like Moby Dick (similar to fly fishing). I've always been a baitcasting guy and from what I've read, it's pretty difficult to go wrong with a spinning reel. How would a Shimano Sienna work for a first cheap spinning reel? Also, what would be a good budget ultra light or just light rod? Thanks and any help would be appreciated! Quote
Super User tomustang Posted January 29, 2014 Super User Posted January 29, 2014 I've used a sienna 1000 and its a nice reel for the money. It is smooth and the drag is really nice. I use a st croix Avid 7ft 2 piece ultra light moderate (model AVS70ULM2) for most of my ultralight needs, I choose it for being compact for travel and doesn't feel any less than the one piece they make. That being said st croix also makes one in the Premier model but for much less at $120 (model PS70ULF2) Quote

Now for the rod, are there any cheaper rods (under 50 maybe?) you can think of? I know I'm getting what I pay for but I'm not looking for a nice combo, just something every now and then for fun. EvanT123 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I would to a look at the discontinued daiwa Procyon on that auction site. It will be alittle over 50 bucks but is a great rod for the $$$. Quote
curtis9 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I have a quantum QX36 5 ft UL. I got it for $35. I use it mostly for throwing crickets at bluegill. I have a Sienna 1000 on it. I think it's perfect combo for what you are looking for. http://www.quantumfishing.com/products/2350/QX36.aspx Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Ugly stick ultralights are probably one of the worst routes to take. The rod is glass and is extremely whippy. http://www.fishusa.com/Product/Okuma-SST-Trout-Spinning-Rods & http://www.fishusa.com/Product/Pflueger-Trion-Spinning-Reels Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 5' UL Berkeley Cherrywood is what I use. $28 Quote

The only rod i've tried under $50 is a quantum xtralite from walmart for anround $22, I doubt they make it anymore but it did ok for a starter UL rod. It was a 6'6 2 piece blue rod with cork grips Quote
DelcoSol Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 St Croix Premier and Pfeluger President. about $150 and it's awesome. Quote

mathnerdm Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 So what I ended up going with was a Sienna 1000 and a Bass Pro Micro light 7'6" ultralight. Gonna take em out today, can't wait! Thanks all for your help! Quote

Thanks all for your help! Good choice on the BPS MicroLite. I've used the 6'6" version as a trout and panfish rod for several years with no complaints at all. Tom Quote
