I know this is a bit off topic and has nothing to do with my situation but I have to ask...

Some of you are fussing about high shipping cost on ebay, why?

All you have to do is add the shipping cost plus the item price. If the total is more than you want to pay....don't buy it. Why would $15 shipping + $5 item cost be any different from paying $15 item cost + $5 shipping? The total is still $20 either way.

That makes absolutely no sense.... :

My gripe is seller claims shipping is $15 when the actual cost is like $8-$9.That's a $6-$7 rip off..and then let's say he's got 20 items just like it. Now he's pocketing $120-$140 profit..which in my eyes is stealing.Because he lied about the actual shipping cost.

Most Ebay stores always get the shipping cost right...atleast from my experience from buying on there.

You can't be serious. How can you not see the logic in that?

Before you bid, take whatever amount the shipping cost is and add it with the item's cost. If the total is more than you want to pay DON'T BUY IT! You are in control of this matter. That's why it's called an auction.

Example:

A high end Shimano reel(or whatever brand you like) normally retails in stores or Bass Pro Shops for $200

The seller lists the Reel on Ebay for $.01(1 penny) with $199 shipping.

So you are still getting the reel for the same $200 you would pay for it in a store ect,but now the seller has to ship the item, which will deduct from the original profit,lets say it costs $10 to ship.

Do the math. You just picked up a reel for $10 LESS than it cost at Bass Pro Shops.

Not a huge savings,but some savings nonetheless.

What I do get angry about is when someone lists an item for $5.00 With shipping of $12. I get the item and shipping was only ACTUALLY $2.50.

When asked about the High Charge of shipping vs. Actual shipping costs,then the seller goes on to say that the "overage" was for "materials, time and fue.l" To top it off they use a USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box to ship the item in (which is FREE at the Post office) and they have the option of having the Mail Carrier pick the item up from their home.

In that instance,whose fuel is it? How much did the seller pay for materials? A little tape? Some of those USPS Flat Rate boxes have self sealing sticky flaps.

Time? Unless its unusually large or heavy,or requires special packaging,boxing the items up doesnt take but a matter of minutes.

Ohhh and then I suppose the seller wants to be compensated for the "time" it took to take the pictures of the item,list the item,check the auction,answer any questions and send the invoice when the auction is over.

There are some crooked ones out there,thats for sure!!!

This is what I'm trying to get at...in this case you don't have to buy it just simply move to the next item. There is no trickery or hidden fee. It's right in front of you.

I have purchased many Shimano Reels off of E-Bay. In today's times the high end stuff is not selling quickly so a sellers cash is tied up. On the buy it now if I am willing to pay that price I'll contact the seller & tell them I'll buy the reel if he pays the shipping If he does I pay right then, If not he lost a sale. On the auction I figure the most I'll pay including the shipping & that is it. One other thing is I usually buy NIB items. I have yet to have a problem & always beat the retail price by a good bit.

I think those of you who are complaining about the shipping costs need to realize the shipping fee listed is what you are going to pay, and not what the actual shipping cost is. If I list a shipping fee of, say, $10.00 for an item, that is what you are going to pay for shipping. I'm NOT saying how much it will cost me to ship the item. So like others have said just add the shipping and the item price, and either buy it or don't buy it. And as to the post: I've purchased many items on Ebay without any issues.

I'm not going to get into that. I'll rant and rave for days about that subject. I'll just say this and be done. I don't care if people raise the shipping price some, excuse me, circumvent ebay fees because ebay is so greedy and deceitful that they will eventually ruin it. I figure the bait in a store, with tax, would sell for $7.50 - $8.50, plus my time to go back and forth buying it. In this case I would probably not bid more than $3.51, which when added to the shipping, would bring the total cost of the bait to $6.50.

I feel that would be a fair price for this particular bait. It is for everyone to decide what total price they are willing to pay, no matter what the shipping cost is.

If you feel they are charging too much, either don't bid at all or don't bid more than the total cost you are willing to pay which would be your bid + the shipping cost.

Pretty simple to figure out and avoid if you don't agree with the shipping cost. I usually avoid sellers that charge high shipping costs but sometimes the total cost for the item is the "STEAL"

I never bid on an item without factoring in the shipping.

If you do, and you think the shipping was too much, it's your own fault and you should look in the mirror for the person to blame.

I've been buying items off Ebay since 06, and have bought maybe close to 50 lures and I had to open a case one time for not receiving my item, he eventually sent it. I normally buy lures that are hard to find, discontinued, Japanese cranks, WEC lures, etc... Recently I had a lure on my watch list but the shipping fee was $9, I sent the seller a email asking why shipping was so high, he said ebay required him to ship ems, but I see similiar lures in Japan with shipping around $4-$5, so I just remove this sellers item from my watch list and look elsewhere. And at times, it depends how bad I want the lure, or how hard it is to find. I recently ordered 2 lures from Ichiban tackle and the shipping was $16, I really wanted the lures, knew it up front and paid the cost.

Did you even request an invoice from the seller?

That is something you should always do and don't pay until the numbers match the listing. This would be a prime example of when to open a case against the seller. I would quit worrying about what the seller is charging for shipping as most people are smart enough to bid based on the total cost, including shipping. If the shipping cost is high, the item will probably sell for less than an identical item with a lower shipping cost.

You need to do the math.

I think it was bad luck.. I sell a lot of stuff on ebay and my feedback is 100%, and I also buy a lot of stuff on ebay and have had very few bad experiences, but they are out there..some people are just there for the money, hence the ripoff shipping charges.

Bad luck no. It was ignorance on my behalf for fooling with someone that has 99.2% positive. I've never had a single issue with someone that has 100% positive feedback. I am also a seller(with 100% positive feedback) and know how hard it is to satisfy every single person when you have thousands of transactions every year but it happens.

Making money on shipping is not the issue here. I make money on shipping to. Everybody does. Ebay gets so and so percentage of the final sale price. You tack a few bucks on shipping because ebay doesn't get any of that money. This is not dishonest because it doesn't change the final value the customer pays. This guy charged me for Priority then used a slower, cheaper method of delivery. That's false advertisement.

Both Priority and 1st class are advertised with 2-3 day delivery times.  On something as small as a bag of hooks or weights I'm not surprised the seller used first class though he should have notified you. 

100% feedback is very, very hard to maintain if you sell regularly.  There is a small percentage of Ebay buyers who have gross over expectations of anything they purchase and are way too quick to leave negative or neutral feedback despite how you attempt to resolve their problem.  If you're purchasing from a frequent seller with a rating over 95% you will probably not have an issue.

Who cares how much shipping is as long as you're getting a good deal??

If the best price I can find on an item anywhere is $100, and I find it on ebay for $80 plus $10 shipping, I just saved $10. So I'm happy, and couldn't care less how much the dude made.

Some stuff I see really makes me wonder though.

I saw a Mojo rod up for bid. That is around a $100 rod, and of course some places even have free shipping. The bidding was in the neighborhood of 60 bucks. I was thinking of bidding, then I saw that the shipping was - wait for it - $120!!!

Obviously that was a mistake I thought to myself. So I emailed the seller and said, "Did you mean to say $20 shipping?"

He answered right away with a "Nope."

I watched the listing until it ended. The rod sold for just over $60 I believe. So someone got a $100 rod for a total of $180.

Something fishy going on, although I have no idea what. 

Oh, and he was shipping it from Kansas, so it's not like he was trying to send it over from North Korea or something.

shipping was 3.99 a lure. I bought these lures 2 days apart paid for each 1 separately, when i receive them the both packaged together and shipping was $1.57

I sell a lot of stuff on eBay and my shipping is $3.00 a lure but with that 3.00 i buy the envelope delivery conformation and insurance if its over 10 bucks and multiple items i give a discount

I messaged the guy and told him his shipping was outrageous i explained if i receive each item separately i wouldn't of bitched but got both items and no delivery conformation so i told him i would give him a chance to make it right before i left feedback [i was on my lunch break] when i got home he refunded all my money so i sent him a message what am i supposed to do send the lures back. He replied with a no call it an early Christmas present. Needless to say he got very good feedback. was that my goal to get free lures no i wanted a couple bucks off. sorry for the long post and my mistake grammar but hopefully u get the message there not all crooks

Well that's something you'd have to email him about.Many sellers will try the best way to please their customer. Dozer used to post around here.Some will gladly explain why they ship the way they do.

With the holidays coming up,everything is going to start getting delayed or take longer than usual to ship.  :-/

You should have contacted the seller and asked if he combined shipping for multiple items won. If the answer was yes, after you won the second item, you should have asked him for an invoice showing the combined shipping. You have no reason to complain after the fact. The shipping costs were obviously clearly listed. Communication is very important when buying and selling on ebay. You paid the price for each item won, and the listed shipping cost. You did the right thing in contacting the seller and sounds like you made out pretty good in the end. Advice to all buyers-

If you intend to bid on and possibly win more than one item from a particular seller, contact him/her to see if they combine shipping and then if you win more than one, wait for an invoice or request one before paying.

Alot of sellers automatically combine shipping. Click on the SEE ALL DETAILS link next to the shipping cost.
