pbizzle Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 After being left at school on multiple occasions due to practice cancellations, I finally got an iPhone this Christmas. I really like it, but I have come to the realization that my el-cheapo case just won't cut it. It has a slick plastic back which has made me drop it several times, but luckily nothing has happened yet. Now I'm in the market for a new case, and I've been considering either the otterbox or lifeproof case. The otterbox($60) is really impact resistant and cost $20 less than the lifeproof, but it's not waterproof and it's bulky. The lifeproof($80) seems to be impact resistant, waterproof, more ergonomic than the otterbox, and it has an aftermarket lifejacket($35) that you can put over your case to make your phone float, but it's $20 more plus the $35 for the lifejacket. So far the lifeproof seems like the way to go, especially since you can make it float, but I know a lot of people are happy with their otterboxes. So I would like y'all's thoughts on this. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 If you are fishing , life proof is the way to go. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 If you're ever next to water get the lifeproof Quote
Super User Darren. Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 x3 on the LifeProof. Which is now owned by Otterbox, FWIW... Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 Otterbox survives drops better than life proof. They survive construction sites better too. Life proof survives water better. Which are you more concerned with? Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I have a 4S and For water application life proof works well. However I have owned 2 and neither lasted more than a year. Otter box is just way to bulky so I settled on a ballistic case. $24 from amazon not waterproof but it slim enough to put in and out of my pocket and so far has lasted longer than the life proof case. http://www.amazon.com/Ballistic-EV0890-M185-Every1-Case-iPhone/dp/B0092Y9MXQ/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1390771451&sr=8-22&keywords=ballistic+iphone+4s+case Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 I've used Otterbox's on all my phones and never had a cracked screen or any damage due to impact. The nice thing about the rubberized cover is it is very grippy, you are far less likely to drop the phone. I did lose a phone to water once though. Otterbox's are definitely not waterproof. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 27, 2014 Super User Posted January 27, 2014 I'll buck the trend here and say neither....to me you defeat the entire purpose of having a sleek phone when you put one of those horrible cases on there. Yes they do their job as intended but to me if i can't put it in my pocket then i am not getting it. I have one of these cases http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/IPH5KXNU/ and it has done me well so far. Also get the insurance and that way if anything happens you pay a deductible and you have a new phone....end of story lol Quote
Trek Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 I use an otterbox because they are tough. I work in construction and they hold up. When I'm in the boat they go in the glove box and I don't talk on them unless I'm sitting in the seat. Period ! If you want your phone to last then set rules and stick to them. After all it's just a phone. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 27, 2014 Super User Posted January 27, 2014 I'm pretty much with Flyfisher. I have a Razr maxx with a skin on it, not slippery at all and still slim. The majority of time I have it in a belt pouch, it's a Fellows and holding up very well, other times I just put in my pocket. I'm very cautious with it, always step back from the water when I take it out, quite often I don't take it with me if it's raining or high surf. The phone to me is more vital than taking a picture. Super User Teal Posted January 27, 2014 Super User Posted January 27, 2014 Mine typically stays in the truck while out fishin . I have an otterbox, but only because lifeproof doesn't make a case for the HTC phones. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 27, 2014 Super User Posted January 27, 2014 Lifeproof Nuud! I have one on my phone and iPad and I like them. Do not get the Free you will hate it I got a Otterbox for my son on his iPad and my wife also has an Otterbox on her iPhone. For me I need the waterproof cover. Super User AK-Jax86 Posted January 28, 2014 Super User Posted January 28, 2014 LifeProof case is what I am getting. Never been a fan of the big bulky OB. Never knew about the life jacket that makes it float I will get that too, $115 for a case lol I guess that's better than losing my iphone to the water though. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted January 28, 2014 Super User Posted January 28, 2014 Frys electronics has Lifeproof cases on sale in store for $49.99 and online for $59.99 Quote
pbizzle Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 It seems like the general consensus is that LP is the way to go. I felt both at school today since my friends have them, and I like the lifeproof more. It's slim and it passed some drop test at shoulder height. I'm with AK though, I can't believe that I'm going to spend so much. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted January 29, 2014 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted January 29, 2014 I have had Otter box, Ballistic and Lifeproof for my iPhone 4 over the last 3 years. They all have strong points but Life Proof is by far the best and lightest. Quote
