Kickedback Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Has anyone tried the new gx2 by ugly stik? Thinking of the ML 7' or longer for a wormin rod. All kidding aside they make a good rod for certain apps. and these sound like an option. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 You really want to get your hands on the various GX2 rods in your local sporting goods store. I've got some Ugly Stik Lite rods we use for salt water, and live baiting, so looked at the GX2 for same purpose. Personally, it is way too heavy for my liking. I can't stand heavy rods for bass fishing. Kills my elbows and wrists with all the subtle bait movement I do with soft plastics. But that's my MO when fishing. You might be a beast of a man with Popeye forearms and the GX2 feels like a feather in your hands Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 For the same money the regular Berkley Lightning Rod is going to be a much better rod than the Ugly stik for bass fishing. No, it won't be as "tough" as an Ugly Stik, but they are pretty durable if that's a consideration for you. Personally, I'd spend $10 more and get a Berkley Lightning Rod Shock, or Abu Garcia Vengeance, they are great bangs for the buck at only $49...........cheaper at some places if you shop around, 7 Quote
bflp3 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 BPS Tourney Special rods have done me well. Only $39 when they are on sale. 3 Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Another vote for the Lighting Rod. 1 Quote
Super User MCS Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 Lightning rods are good if I were you I would check those out 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 Besides rods already mentioned, you should search through Cabela's and BPS listings. Sellus, Vengeance, Aird, Laguan are a few dollars more. Cabrela's Pro Guide is on sale...normally $45 now $30. BPS has the Tourney Special on sale...normally $50 now $40. There is a recent thread on the Conolon rods. Shouldn't be too many pages back or a search should turn it up. Little bit about the new ones is here: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_123/abu_garcia_conolon.html Some of these may be better options. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted January 26, 2014 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted January 26, 2014 Even though I normally fish more expensive rods, I still have several lightning rods and 2 new lighting shock rods in my arsenal. They are awesome low priced rods and I prefer them for some applications. Quote

As far as im concerned,i wasted my money on the more expensive ones.Havent had ANY trouble with any of them. Id go to walmart and check them out for sure. That way you can make sure the guides are straight, etc. You can also take your reel in with you to put on the rods, which will a great help. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted January 27, 2014 Super User Posted January 27, 2014 Two words: Duckett Ghost! That rod costs double the rod he was asking about. Not really comparable. Quote

Super User Tywithay Posted January 27, 2014 Super User Posted January 27, 2014 I would recommend looking at Gander Mountain. They have a lot of different GSX models that are discounted heavily. Rumor has it they were sued because GSX is too similar to GLX, so they have to discount those rods to get rid of them; or something to that affect. You can find some $70-$100 rods for under $50 pretty regularly. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted January 27, 2014 Super User Posted January 27, 2014 It's been a day now, you should have bought the lightning rod by now! Quote
ColdSVT Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Another vote for the tried and true Lightning rod! Great rods for under 50bucks....man i remember when they were 19.99 lol As a matter of fact i still have a few. One from 1996 and anoher from 2004. I still use em! One is a 5'5 ultra lite for trout fishing and the other is a 7 H that i use for big froggin in heavy slop of pads Quote
A-Rob Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 daiwa procyon is a solid rod for the $$ 1 Quote
pbizzle Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Are y'all really going to make me recommend the H2O Ethos in another thread? They're great rods for $60. I own three, and I fish them all in tournaments. A lot of guys on this forum really like them, and several members say that they're just as good as the Abu Veritas($100). In my opinion the Veritas are slightly better, but they're just as good as the Abu Vendettas($80). I'd really recommend that you look into them. Quote
Dyerbassman Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 BPS Brawler is $20 and looks like their version of an Ugly Stik. Not that I've tried it. But it's cheap. Go with the Lightning Rod though. You won't be disappointed. I have 3 and love them. Quote
Salamander12 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 BPS Tourney Special rods have done me well. Only $39 when they are on sale.X2 on this, I have 3 of these rods and they're great for me. Right niw they're on sale for $39.99 can't beat that price for this rod.BPS Brawler is $20 and looks like their version of an Ugly Stik. Not that I've tried it. But it's cheap. Go with the Lightning Rod though. You won't be disappointed. I have 3 and love them. The employees at bps tell me that the brawler is basically an ugly stick. Not sure how true it is but I've heard it from a few of them. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 i see my post was deleted, why? all i said was i dont consider a rod that costs $150 a budget rod, i said nothing bad about the company or their product, it couldve been any maker of rods and i'd have the same opinion... 1 Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted January 29, 2014 Super User Posted January 29, 2014 Lightning rod shock was my first casting rod. I sold it to a friend after a year of use and it's still being used by him years later. It can be bought at Walmart and if it ever breaks just exchange it there free of charge and no questions asked.
