Banned-99884 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Getting a new jig rod. Either getting a dobyns champion 735 or a powell endurance 723 Ex fast tip. Which one would be better for football jogs and arkie heads in 1-30 feet of water? Also, if i get the champ i will get a 150$ reel if i get the endurance i will get around a 200$ reel. So which set up? thanks Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 I can't speak on anything Dobyns since I don't own one. They have a huge following though and nobody has anything bad to say about them. I do own a few Powell's. 2 of them being the 723. No matter what reel I put on it,it always balances right at the nut on the reel seat or very very close. I will say that the 714 would be a better jig rod in deeper water and for heavier jigs since it goes up to 1oz. The 725 is a good choice too if you aren't throwing under 3/8 jigs. The 723 has a max of 3/4oz and with a 1/2 jig and a trailer you're right at it. Quote
motodmast Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 i would recommend the dobyns. i have the 745 champ extreme and it is my exclusive football head and carolina rig rod. the 735 would work perfect for the applications you want to do. as for a reel, i you can find Lews Tournament Pros for $150, that is an amazing reel 1 Quote
Craiger12 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 For jig fishing you will want the most sensitive rod you can afford. Sensitivity can be subjective, but in this case, the Dobyns should be the more sensitive rod. It will also have more power and balance very well, both of which are desirable in a jig stick. I find my 735C to be an excellent pitching stick. Also, there are some quality reels to be had in the $150 price range. Quote
Banned-99884 Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 Yes, getting the Dobyns champ for sure. Looking at the diawa tatulas and the lews tournament mg or the Shimano chronarch i might save up for Quote
Arv Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Both are nice rods but I would definitely recommend the dobyns 735 if you're planning on throwing football jigs. I'm assuming you will be over 1/2 oz in certain situations and I don't think the powell 723 handles those weights + a trailer nearly as well as the dobyns. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 Powell rods are very good. Yes I had a 765 rated to 1 1/2 oz but it was better suited at 3/4 oz very sensitive.. Slightly tip heavy... Gary Dobyns worked for Powell and has been in china a lot ! He formed his company and his rods must be incredible . That's all you read about are Dobyns so they have to be that good... I would lean to Dobyns line.. Just because they have so much to offer.. Great momentum behind his company. By the way , I don't think you would be dissatisfied with a Powell endurance ! And yes a tatula would be a awesome reel for it . Happy fishing Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 Never tried a powell, but the dobyns champion line is a great rod. Quote
Grantman83 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Dobyns champion. You won't regret it Quote
