Loop_Dad Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Coming to summer, one rod I might still be looking to buy is H action punching rod. I'm looking for something not too tip heavy and something light, basically something that is not a chore to use it all day. Any recommendations? Thanks! Quote
Grantman83 Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 A veritas 7'6 medium heavy is around 100 and will have a ton of backbone. It's abit tip heavy but a heavier reel will balance it out for you. Quote
Loop_Dad Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 tatula You mean their 7'6" Heavy Flipping stick? Is it light (or lighter?) Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 I have a 7'6 Veritas I bought to pair with my zillion. Which is a heavier reel by today's standards. It's still tip heavy. I recently bought a 7'6 Denali Jadewood to use instead. Still tip heavy with a tatula or zillion mounted on it. Quote
Loop_Dad Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 I need something with lure rating up to 1 1/2 oz I think. I wonder if anyone use shorter rods for punching? Would that not work? I'm asking this because I like shorter rods these days and that would make rods lighter... Quote
TiNuts Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I got a 7' H carbonlite microguide that I really like. I haven't used it for punching though. It's rated to 1 1/2 oz. Quote

A longer rod allows you to get more leverage on the hook set and also to horse the fish out of the slop. In my opinion the $100 rod catergory isn't going to get you a lot of refinement. I will say that I had an *** black 7'3 H that was a pretty light rod and is rated up to 1.5oz I bought it to flip with but the trigger bothered me and it got turned into a frog rod and then traded. I stuck one of those rubber chair leg protectors with some washers in it over the butt end and it balances out my Jadewood nicely. Yes it's a bit heavier overall but in the hand I don't notice it because it's not tip heavy anymore. Just a thought for you there. Will a shorter rod work, yes but it's not optimal. Quote

I would recommend either the 7'6 or 7'11 Denali Jadewood for around your budget. Those models range from $120- $130. Super strong sensitive and light. Yanked some fish over the boat last week @ Toho. Loop_Dad Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 Thanks folks for the inputs. I got a 7' H carbonlite microguide that I really like. I haven't used it for punching though. It's rated to 1 1/2 oz. The rod being only 7' sounds good. When punching you are in some heavy cover. I might have had a wrong idea about punching rod. I thought you just get an inexpensive hard stick. Anyhow, I guess I can do 7'3"... I've tried the chair leg cap thing with quarters in them before, actually with current MH flipping stick. I kept bumping it into things or myself and didn't like it much. I even duck taped it to rod and made a kinda mess too. I would recommend either the 7'6 or 7'11 Denali Jadewood for around your budget. Those models range from $120- $130. Super strong sensitive and light. Yanked some fish over the boat last week @ Toho. 7'11 can handle upto 3 oz. Maybe I need that because I want to use 1 1/2 oz weight with baits. However, I am not too excited about using 7'11'. I really am enjoying shorter rods these days in general. I will stop by at BPS (1 1/2 hour away) with the list of candidates to try out if they carry these. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 28, 2014 Super User Posted January 28, 2014 Unless you want to spend more money , rods that are 7'6" or longer in this price range are generally a little tip heavy. The Abu's IMHO are the LEAST tip heavy of the bunch in this price range, thats kinda why I went to them. You deffinatly DO NOT want a Shimano or St Croix, nothing short of a boat anchor balances them out. I use a 7'6" H Vendetta, and with an 8oz. Gen1 Revo STX it's not bad, not bad at all. The 7'11" H Shimano Clarus I had was terrible even with a 10 oz. Citica D on it, and the 7'11" H St Croix Mojo I had was OK with the Citica D on it, but overall just too heavy of a combo to flip comfortably all day with. Quote
Grantman83 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Don't forget that a long rod combined with a split grip will be even more tip heavy. If you can, try and find a full handle rod just to help with balance Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 28, 2014 Super User Posted January 28, 2014 Good advice here. Whole heartedly agree with WW2 and Ripin Lips. You have a few months till summer, can you save a few bucks here and there and up you budget? While I agree with those guys, I feel for another 75 bucks or so you can a much nicer rod with better components Quote
mjseverson24 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I use the 8' st. croix flippin stick for punching and I bought the bps balancing system for it. This works great the rod feels light even though it isnt, for around $ 100.00 this works well for me, it is also sensitive enough to be a good jig rod/frog rod. other options like farmer said are the abu series, you wont need a balancing system with these, and they are pretty sensitive for the pricepoint. I have the 7'6" H vendetta for frogs/big jigs and it works great. Mitch Quote
A-Rob Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 one of the shimano flipping sticks is around that price point (i think clarus). It is worth a feel Quote
