dam0007 Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Picked up 2 used ones off of Brian from here in the flea market. Reels are mint. Yes I know I'm a die hard shimano guy lol gotta say I'm impressed with these for first hands on with them. Looking forward to spring and try these out on the water. My key reason for grabbing these was to experience the tws system first hand. Do wanna note construction feels solid, all around and they really don't feel that heavy compared to curados. 1 Quote
Diggy Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Im looking into this reel myself or the type r. Reading reviews, I notice people call this reel "heavy" . I fish a revo sx gen 2 and PQs which are much heavier with no probs. I don't see many people complain about the PQ being 8.8 ozs. Report back. I saw many of the other Daiwa models are on sale on TW but I may stick to this model. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 New tackle is just plain FUN! Doesn't matter what it is, new rods, reels, jigs, plastics. You name it. Hootie 3 Quote
GaterB Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 My Tatula balances better on every rod I have better than my other lighter reels. It puts the weight of the combo in the hand I palm my reel with, and I love it. I feel like a balanced combo feels "lighter." I have reels that weigh less on the scale, but when on the rod, make the combo feel tip heavy, which I do not care for. Just my .02 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 I have a 100P, 2 100H, and a R100H....might add more if the new Curado isn't as good as it appears to be. Tatula is one of my favorite reels. Casting is effortless, retrieve is effortless. I haven't found a better reel under $250, and I've used almost all of them. The TWS is the real deal, it just gives a different feel when you're casting; hard to explain. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 The TWS is one heck of a concept. I love mine. Quote

I finally got to handle these and didnt really notice what some say as it being a "big" reel. It felt very good in my hand but was on one of those display handles not a rod. It seems to be around the size of a Pinnacle reel Ive had for a long time so may just be accustomed to the size. Quote
Diggy Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 I think Ill pick one of these up and a clearance Curado when they drop. The reviews of the tatula have been solid from 30 mins of reading. Quote
GaterB Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Had to add that today I finally got to really test the casting ability of my Tatula. With a Spro frog tied on (older one that I use just to cast around in the yard), the brakes set to 6, and the spool tension set to a medium rate of fall, I almost threw all the braid off my reel. I have about 65 yards of PP Slick on top of 20lb mono backing, and was able to almost reach the connecting knot. I was blown away. Quote
dam0007 Posted January 27, 2014 Author Posted January 27, 2014 1st and only gripe thus far. I took one out of the box just playing with it showing my father in law. When just holding it in my hand no rod/line and motioned a air cast i heard it rattle a bit. Initially I was like I don't understand. To cut a long story short theres some play in the spool but is eliminated with a slight amount of thumb pressure on it. Just reeling it with no line you hear a little bit of chatter. I originally thought it was the handle. Checked the other one out and same thing. My assuption is once line is on it and there is constant tension on the spool this will be eliminated.... My Shimanos definitely dont do this neither does my Daiwa Aird or Quantum Accursit. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted January 27, 2014 Super User Posted January 27, 2014 Did increase of spool tension knob help at all? Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted January 27, 2014 Super User Posted January 27, 2014 I intend to pick up one as well as 2 of the new curados. Tatula appears to be a very good reel! Quote

My Shimanos definitely dont do this neither does my Daiwa Aird or Quantum Accursit. I was able to replicate what you described just now with mine. I was able to eliminate the play you talked about by tightening down the spool tension knob. However, I do not tighten it as much as I did to eliminate the aforementioned play in the spool when I am casting normally. I believe this play may come from how the piece of the spool that moves outward on the cast (Part of the MagForce-Z braking system) fits into the side plate. I have never felt this play when reeling or casting the reel, and I don't think it will hurt performance at all. Quote

Never experienced that with any reel regardless of make or tension knob adjustment. Just plain weird. As I said I have yet to spool 'em. Prob won't be fishing for another 2 months at least. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 28, 2014 Super User Posted January 28, 2014 I have some higher end Daiwas and they do the same thing. As soon as it's under any type of load,it goes away. It won't hurt anything at all. Also be sure to flush and re oil your 3 factory bearings. It wakes the reel up. Quote
