WiregrassRiverRat Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I am going to be getting a jig only combo setup (3/8-3/4 oz) and I am debating on using 17-20lb invizx fluoro or doing maybe some Suffix 832 Lo-Vis Green in 30-40lb test.. The rod will be a dobyns champ 735... I will mostly be fishing docks and brush in 1-20 feet.. BUT this rod will be my flipping rod (SEMINOLE GRASS) occasionally until I can afford a 765 champ What would you guys suggest Quote
gr8outdoorz Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 If you are using it mostly around wood I would use fluoro. In my experience, braid & wood don't do too well together. If its mostly for grass, go with braid. It will cut through the grass better. Quote
SCangler91 Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 After doing a good bit of research on this site and others I spooled my setup with 17 lb Seaguar AbrazX. 1 Quote
livetofish28 Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I would go with the braid and just add a leader in cover Tight lines Andrew Quote

AbrazX is what I use. The lake I fish has a LOT of wood. Matter of fact, it's like fishing "in the woods". Hootie Quote
Dr. Watson Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I use 832 braid with about a 15' Seaguar flouro leader, works great for me. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 Personally, I would go with the braid. Fishing in WI I encounter all different types of cover and I've never had an issue with braid in any of them. Quote

Dr. Watson Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I like leader on a spinning setup but despise it on a baitcaster.. so I am trying to stay away from that if I can.. I don't see a problem with using straight braid, besides the end won't last as long from rocks and such, but I would back off on my drag a little to compensate for the lack of stretch. Just out of curiosity, why don't you like a leader on a baitcaster? Is it from the knot going through the guides? 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 Why does everyone believe braid is weakened by abrasion from wood under water? Braid can be cut or abraided from hard sharp edges like rock and zebrs mussels, not wood. Fluorocarbon can also be abraided or weakened by the same rocks and zebra mussels and has lowest knot strength of all line types. Premium monofilament line like P-line or whatever you prefer has better abrasion resistance to rocks and mussels than either braid or FC. I personally don't like to fish with braid, but use it because of it's excellent performance for jig fishing where you plan to fish. I use FC line in clear deep rocky structure lakes and put up with weaker knots and line abrasion by retrying and inspecting my line. FC line sinks, has less line drag going through water, both advantages over braid and mono. If you go to braid using a bait caster, use line equal to at least .010 to .012 diameter so you can handle the line with getting cut fingers. Leader? It's a personal confidence thing, are 2 knots with it? Good luck. Tom Quote

Yeah I hate it.. really dont LOVE it on my spinning. but I can manage because I can use smaller lines so its not as noticeable.. and to save my knots on jigs I normally put a bobber stop on the end.. that little hunk of rubber helps the knot in my opinion.. I have been experimenting with braid/ fluoro leader. There are several advantages, but most important to me is the ability to break-off when you need to. Quote

I always use a double uni knot to tie my braid and flouro together, keeps a nice low profile. If you do end up using a leader try experimenting with different knots, maybe you'll find one you like. Thats what I use too.. had backing tied on that way on a baitcaster to save line.. had a fish pull me out.. and snap.. the line went.. not from pressure.. but when it hit the guides... just always makes me nervous now.. I can see it, I don't blame ya, but it could have been a fluke event too. Quote

Wouldn't consider PLine a premium mono either, to be honest. Quote
