Super User roadwarrior Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 If anyone else has a Stella and wants to trade it for any Pflueger model, NIB and shipped direct, I'm in! Back to the original question: The Symetre is where to start. On the baitcasting side, Citica 1 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 Have owned Shimano for years. Was given a Stella for a gift and it has been awesome for year after year. It's both light and smooth. Have the older model Curado's and Chronarchs and they are still working smooth and have no need for new ones. Also have several other models and I liked them all. Clean and oil they're good for another year. Tight Lines Quote
Super User South FLA Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge vs Toyota vs Honda I personally like Shimano and Daiwa reels, I have tried and still own other brands (Pflueger, Penn, Ryobi, Abu Garcia, Ardent, Quantum, etc) and I go through stages of likes. For example when the Smoke first came out and I saw Mike casting frogs a country mile compared to my Revo Premiers I had to get one, and it was great for about six months of HEAVY use, after that it had more slop and play in it than a Ford Pinto's gas tank. From my experience the higher priced point reels tend to hold up better and of the higher priced point manufacturers its my opinion that Shimano and Daiwa hold up better after time. Nevertheless, I really think there is a value play for most recreational fishermen with Revos, Pfluegers, Shimano, and Daiwa. around the $120 price point. KVD will still out fish me with a Zebco though! Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 The specs may seem the same on paper, aside from a magnesium frame. Real time differences can be seen on the water in terms of performance and longevity. We are talking stamped mass produced parts vs. Machined quality high tolerance parts. I have no problem with Lews reels, they are good, but to me there is a noticable difference between good and great. When comparing Lews highest offering to say a Core, the Lews just doen not have that "it" factor that I personally desire. A person can't draw this conclusion until they have actually used both reels for a fair amount of time. Just making claims based off specs is useless, however most of the reviews you see are exactly that. Why pay 100 dollars more for a Shimano when I can get the same thing rolled into a Lews package? It boils down to labor, quality control, quality of parts used, etc. The problem with lews is that all of their reels use the same platform/frame. For the consumers, there is not much incentive to jump up to the higher end reels from a TP because they are basically the same thing. If shimano were to do this, the shimano citica/curado frame would be used in the core, met, or antares. Quote
Jon G Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 The new Curado will be introduced next month. Rumor has it that both the E and G will go for +/- $100 on closeout. Wow i havent heard of this until now. Does this mean any 200E's they possibly may have left will run for 100 or is it the 300E and EJ. Because if I see a 200E7 for $100 I probabllly wont get the new curado... Quote
Hogsticker Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I've never seen a discontinued Shimano sale for 50% off. No idea where and how these rumors get generated. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I'm not holding my breath. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Academy sports and bass pro both had the curado 200e/50e for $99 when they were discontinued and on clearance.. I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen again. I will be getting a few when it happens. Quote

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I'm not holding my breath. Not rumors - people are thinking back to when the Citica and Curado "E" models were discontinued. I got a Curado 50E for $98 shipped (50% off). Some of the last Curado 200Es were clearanced under $100 as well (40% off). The final clearance price on Citica E that I saw was $60 or so (50% off). Not saying that it will happen again...but with the Curado G's baggage (deserved or not), I think people are predicting pretty hefty clearance prices. OTOH - perhaps the major retailers just don't have that high of inventory to have to blow them out that cheap. In a month or so...we'll see how it all pans out. Quote
Gaerith Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Dick's already had a sale on the Curado G's for $98 recently, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them clearance for that amount or lower (everywhere) when they get discontinued. I'm curious to see what the Chronarch's go for if they get discontinued. If the Chronarch's end up going for $100, I think it will make for a tough decision whether to get a clearanced Chronarch or the new Curado. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I think you mean TWO clearanced chronarchs vs a new curado Quote
WiregrassRiverRat Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 I went and played with all the shimano and daiwas that my local stores had.. I felt the type R tatula was "loose" compared to the standard tatula.. oddly the reel that blew me away and made me salivate was the chronarch ci4+ or whatever its called.. didnt like the spinning ci4 I like the stradic fj better.. I feel like the chronarch is nice.. but not as nice as the lews tp.. BUT the ci4+ imho and the core stuff beats anything lews could possibly put out... BUT THAT PRICE TAG THOUGH!! Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 The loose type R was probably a lemon.. There is no reason that the type R could be looser than the standard cause there are no differences between the reels actual build, except the drag configuration is a bit different on the type-r. The price tag isn't too bad on the core/ci4+ if you wait for a nice deal to come around. You can get a ci4+ for $180, and a core for about $270. Quote

My suggestion is if you like the Chronarch CI4 then save up the money to get it or you will always have that nagging in the back of your mind what you really wanted when you are fishing something else you bought. Good news is that the new Curado will be out in a month and it looks like its got all the Chronarch Ci4 features but made of aluminum and the reports are that its going to cost about $179. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Do share? How to get them for that cheap? Gander Mtn had the ci4+ for $210 around christmas time.. If you buy from other people, you can get a NIB ci4+ for under $200. Most people sell stuff for 55-70% of retail price.. Quote
5dollarsplash Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I'm very leery of in store models. Was it out of a box or one mounted to play with? Lots of kids and the like beat on those. Quote

Lots of kids and the like beat on those. the Tatula R was sadly the only one I could find and it was a display But the CI4 they didnt have a display.. BUT I FOUND ONE.. and it was KILLER! I just need a cheaper option so I wonder if I would be happy with citicas and the occasional ci4.. I currently have speed spools.. and am moderately happy.. was thinking of the occasional tourney pro.. which would put me in a cheaper price range over all... unless they marked the chronarchs to 100 bucks.. I would maybe buy 3... I will admit lews speed spool feels cheaper in the hand than a chronarch but there is a HUGE price difference there.. Quote

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I'm not holding my breath. Guess you missed TW sale of the curado E series when the G came out. I really doubt the chronarch E will be 99$. 120ish maybe. It took a few drops in prices anyway before the curado E hit 99$. Dicks would be the place to look for the huge early discontinued sale of the chronarch. 1 Quote

I just didnt like the curado.. and I think.. if I wanted to change my whole arsenal to shimano or even diawa.. it would cost me a good 900 dollars.. including trading or selling my speed spools Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 26, 2014 Super User Posted January 26, 2014 The new curado isnt available yet so you obviously wont find them on clearance until they are released at the classic in a month. This is also assuming the chronarch is being diacontinued, 1 Quote

dam0007 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Shimanos are not perfect by any means, I've had a few fail but shortly after purchase. Hands down they last, and last they do. I have the whole spectrum from $30 to $400 of their reels. They all do their job well. I don't knock other brands I own others as we'll but for salt all I use are shimanos. The original bait runner 6500 I have still goes strong over 12 years of being beaten to hell in Long Island sound. But I would like to emphasize maitnence. Take the 2 mins to clean off your reels after every use. For 20/25 once a year send them to a tech to do a full cleaning job if you don't want to DIY. - $0.02 Quote
