Tartan34 Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 I've used Yozuri Hybrid 12 # with great success for Texas rigging, jigs, etc. I've also gone braid with Flouro leader, but I am very confident in the Yozuri. so that's what I use on most of my rigs. Quote
0119 Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 12 or 14# mono. Easy and simple. Your from Clearwater Beach so the big hydrilla filled lakes of central Fl. arent going to be an everyday thing. Hitting the jetty, beach or the water management canals around you are. Most are very clear and getting a snook in the same water isnt impossible. Keep a wheel of 25# leader handy and know how to tie a quick surgeons knot. Quote

ced Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 I've settled on 15 flouro for my baitcaster. In my area in NW FL most of my bass fishing is done in crystal clear water with lots of structure. My baitcaster also has primary duty dealing with big redfish in salt so 15 is a minimum for it. The 15 flouro averages the same diameter as 12/14 mono in most brands, and feels a bit more sensitive to me. Flouro is also said to be less visible in the water, but all human eye tests I've seen make this debatable. I only use braid on my spinners, but again I'm a primarily salt guy. Quote

I have only fished Tarpon Lake so far and they suggested flouro leader there....Does everyone use leaders or anyone use straight braid...Also is anyone is looking for a fishing buddy or has an empty backseat...Love to fish ...I am off sundays &mondays willing to travel to meet someone and pitch in $$$$....Been fishing for 40 years but was in Maine....Little different down here...lol.....Thanks Again Guys !!! I try not to use over 20# because I feel it hampers the action of the lures I prefer to use. When I used to use braid I always used a leader, I myself have no use for braid anymore. My waters are very clear and heavy pressured so I was more confident with a leader, but never bought on to the floro thing. Quote

I always use flourocarbon leader on my braid, makes it a little more forgiving on hooksets, yet keeps the sensitivity of the braid. Just make sure you tie good line to line knots when pairing the leader to the braid. I use a double uni knot, one tying the braid to the leader and one tying the leader to the braid, they tighten down on each other making them slip proof. If its a dedicated rod then sift through other choices. I have 15lb invisx on my so called "soft plastic/jig" rod Quote

In addition, braid provides solid hook-sets and the power to horse big bass out of stalks and pads. We've tried several brands of braid for bassing in central Florida, but now strictly use Berkley 30-lb Fireline Braid. Fireline braid offers excellent abrasion-resistance in spatterdock, maidencane and even in bulrushes. Whenever I see fuzzy line near the lure, I'll always retie the lure, so breaking off in cover is extremely rare. I began with 20-lb Fireline without incident, but switching to 30-lb totally eliminated all 'line-burrowing', and now 'luff knots' are a scarcity. The move from Fireline 20 to Fireline 30 is equal to moving from 6lb mono to 8lb mono. We tie everything direct and never use a fluoro, nylon or copolymer leader, not even in gin-clear Lake Winterset. The exception is dropshotting of course, when stiff fluorocarbon is needed to hold the hooks away from the rig line. Roger 1 Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 I have relatives in the Deland area. We fish smaller lakes. First 3 years I used my brother-in-law's gear. Strictly spinning, strickly 40# green PowerPro, no leaders. He catches his fair share. I now keep 3 baitcast rods and one spinning outfit stored down there. The spinning reel carries 30# braid....no leader....on a MH rod. Baitcast reels I carry back and forth. One reel that always goes is an STX-L with 40# Sufix Performance....no leader and now white from 4 years of use. The other reels that I take vary. Usually at least one has 12# mono although last year the only reel with mono I took had 15# on it. The third reel is more open as one of the 3 rods is a Medium. One year I took my new Curado 51E with 8# mono. Only problem is 8# limits my use to open water. Lures are too expensive to be intentionally throwing them into slop with 8# mono. Haven't taken 8# again since my brother-in-law only fishes for bass and we are almost always are throwing into weeds or pads, and if not into them, next to them. Using leaders with braid in the water we fish would be to please the fisherman as I don't think it would improve your catch. Quote

Last time I used 12lbs on the Kissimmee chain I broke off 9 pounder or more and wondered why I was so stupid. Braid is okay a lot of people are saying braid to Fluro leader. But if your using 15 plus fluorocarbon your going to get more bites and and your line will be safe. Quote
