MainelyBASS Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Leaving Maine to fish the Big O and Im torn between paying someone to take me to some spots or saving $100 and just renting the boat from Roland Martin's Marina. Ive been a tournament fisherman for 8 years now so I am not an idiot when it comes to locating bass, but this is a big difference in fisheries. Any advice would be much appreciated! Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 22, 2014 Super User Posted January 22, 2014 If the total cost difference is only 100 bucks, why not find a reputable guide and let him introduce you to the lake. So your next trip you will be pretty equipped mentally for that Lake then renting a boat would be ideal. But renting a boat and going for it is ok too. Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 If you need a guide -I have 2 friends that go out of Rolands Marina -I can hook ya up 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 22, 2014 Super User Posted January 22, 2014 Perhaps you could conduct a little experiment. The first time out, go ahead and rent the boat. Next, hire a guide. Then compare the two experiences. If you're objective is to test and evaluate your angling skills, scenario one should definitely fill the bill. If your goal is to catch as many of the great bass that this famous but rather expansive body of water has to offer as you can, I'd recommend the guide. Good Luck and please let us know how it goes. Super User geo g Posted January 22, 2014 Super User Posted January 22, 2014 I would hire a guide to take me out the first time and then I would rent a boat. The Lake changes so much from year to year and from high pool to low pool. Get someone to show you around, and ask that person a ton of questions.. Good luck! Quote

Smokinal Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I went to Falcon on a trip in 2012 (from Maine btw) and would definitely hire a guide. Especially if it's only $100? My guide down there was $400 per day, fish or no fish... And welcome to BR as well. Quote
shallow thinker Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 If it was just one day then I'd suggest a guide. The big O is kind of unpredictable in winter. Weather and water level are big deals. Roland's has good guides. You'll want to talk to them and get someone who suits your style of fishing. For example, lots of guides make a living fishing live shiners which is something that doesn't work for me. I have heard good things about Steve Daniel. Others on this board have their favorites too. gar-tracker Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 A Guide That lake is very intimidating to a new comer, as your drop offs, and points in 30 feet of water would be to me.. Quote
GLADES Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 A guide. The lake is very large, and local and current knowledge is essential. After you have some idea where to go, then rent the boat. BTW..The burgers at the Marina Tiki bar are great. 1 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted January 23, 2014 Super User Posted January 23, 2014 Welcome to the forum That's purely a personal decision that only you can make. The size of the waterbody has nothing to do with it (e.g. Atlantic Ocean). Locating fish and determining a successful presentation is my very favorite part of fishing. I really don't care whether you or I crank the sucker to the boat. Frankly, I'd sooner pay money to retain that privilege than forfeit my favorite part of fishing. Roger Quote
MainelyBASS Posted January 23, 2014 Author Posted January 23, 2014 Wow, I couldn't be happier with my decision to join this group. What a great group of guys you all are!! Thanks a lot for your suggestions, and thanks for the warm welcome. I am excited to get a chance to fish the big lake! Thanks again! 1 Quote
