rod + reel suggestions please for a spinning rod that can be used with all lures, like not a specific reel and rod for drop shot spinners etc

I will throw any lure within the weight range of my Fenwick Smallmouth 6'10" MF casting rod so I would suggest either the 6'9" MLF 1/16-5/8 or the 6'9" MXF 1/8-3/4 oz.  fishusa has them for $99.95.  Best price I can find them at.

Going to assume you don't want to spend a lot of money so my first suggestion for a reel would be the Pflueger President.

I'm willing to spend up to $500 on a reel and rod

but the pfleuger is reccommended by everyone, so i might get that.

do you have any experiences with the reel?

Nice budget.  :teeth:

My Pflueger spinning reel is a Supreme XT.  Hasn't seen much use as I much prefer baicast reels.  It is beautiful, smooth and reasonably light.

Personally with that much money I would be looking at 2 outfits.  I think you would be very pleased with the sensitivity of the 6'9" MXF Smallmouth spinning rod.  I know my buddy loves his both for its sensitivity, and ability to handle light weights.  He feels it fishes as well as rods costing $200 and is as well built.  Last year I used the same spec rod except in a casting model.  Really liked it.  Or you could bump price up to the Aetos 7'2" MXF.

For a second rod you could go with the Aetos 7' or 7'6" MHF to use with lures too heavy for the Medium.  The 7'6" lure rating is 1/4 oz. more than for the 7' rod.  Too bad there isn't a spinning rod equivalent to the 6'10" MH-MF casting rod.

As you probably can tell I have become a big fan of Fenwick rods over the past 2 years.  You are getting a lot of rod for the money.  I prefer my Smallmouth rods over my *** Black.  Let the flaming begin.  :teeth3:

What size spinning reel are you guys using for the majority of these applications? I realize that the sizes aren't standardized accross manufacturers, but in general, do you suggest the size 30 or size 40?

If you are willing to spend that much, I would go higher than the president. Don't get me wrong, it is a great reel for the money, but even moving up to the $100 price point with a Shimano Symetre was a noticeable upgrade for me. As Tony L. said, with that much budget, you could get two very nice setups.

Most people would recommend the 30 because it's lighter and will fit better with most bass lures/tackle.

For $500, you could get the Pfleuger Patriarch and still have $300 left to get a nice rod. St. Croix has several nice ones to choose from.

I have a st croix ltb 6'8" mxf with a stradic 2500fj that has been my all purpose spinning rod. You can pick up that combo for $430 retail price. If you wait for a sale you can probably get it for around

if you want to spend more in the rod, you can get a nrx demo rod for under $400, and match it with a cheaper reel. I just picked up a 822 syr. It's a very versatile rod for light baits. It's the only spinning rod I carry majority of the time now.

I second his recommendation.

I also concur about the Fenwick ET rods are more like 200 dollar rods.  The Aetos is better and you can get them for sale too around 120-140, I use my M/F 7' Aetos for Senkos, Drop Shot, Split shot and weightless worms.  In fact in almost every outing last season after acquiring the Aetos, both of these Fenwick rods are always on my kayak.  (Out of the 5 I usually take)

now a days $500 can go to a lot worse things than fishing gear and if he earned the money himself there's no issue.

rods: (TW prices)

Dobyns Champion 703/704 - $249.99

Dobyns Extreme 703 - $299.99

Croix LTB MF MH/F - $249.99

Croix Xtreme MF MH/F - $400

Loomis GLX 853 MH/XF- $455

I have an NRX 852, it's kinda on the lighter side of things, lure rating 1/8-3/8oz. I wouldn't suggest it as all purpose rod.

reels: Shimano Ci-4+ or Stradic FJ

why not

Because you can get something decent for $250, and then put $250 in the bank, so when you need a couple of bucks you have it. But maybe your parents should teach you this..... :Idontknow:

maybe my parents would've taught me if they were still alive.

2 x *** *** Black rods

2 x Shimano Symetre 2500 reels

1 x $100 in the bank and 2 x sweet combos.

But I would also go MH F for overall use and 2500 size reels are ample.
