Super User roadwarrior Posted January 18, 2014 Super User Posted January 18, 2014 http://bassanglermag.com/ Man, I just flipped through the latest addition. Triton Mike wrote a great article on Float 'n Fly. A couple of interesting pieces on jerkbaits and tying jigs. The most interesting piece for me was about blades, or more specifically, the Silver Buddy. What are your thoughts on the winter articles? Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted January 19, 2014 Super User Posted January 19, 2014 I have to say this is definitely my favorite magazine these days. The recurrent basic grammatical errors used to drive me borderline insane and even caused me to reconsider renewing my subscription at one point, but they seem to be doing a much better job catching them lately. I have to admit I smiled while reading Mike's article today when they had its and it's correct. I haven't read the rest of the issue yet, but I'm hoping the whole thing is dialed in. Nice job BAM! 1 Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted January 29, 2014 Super User Posted January 29, 2014 Wow, just finished reading through the entire issue. I stand corrected. So many basic grammatical errors that it's tough to read. I would seriously trade a subscription for my "trouble" to edit the basic errors that continually occur and have no place in a professional magazine this day in age. I love the core of the articles, but man... 3 Quote

I love the core of the articles, but man... That's the reason why I ended my subscription to BAM... at times I found it unreadable. And before someone jumps in to lecture me about how hard it is, I was a professional journalist published in virtually every major newspaper in the world and an editor for one of them. What's amazing is that so many are basic errors that even Microsoft Word's dodgy grammar checker would catch them. I won't pay for that. 1 Quote

I like BAM. Haven't finished this issue, but did read the Float n Fly article. I like winter articles because it seems like this is the toughest time of the year to fish. When it's 20 outside and the water is 40 it's tough to apply Ish's shallow water winter tactics! But it's something to consider when it warms a bit. Quote

In all seriousness, these are basic junior high level grammatical errors. Just knowing when to use its v it's, their v there v they're, and lose v loose would be HUGE. I do not understand how someone could have the passion to develop arguably the best bass fishing magazine around and yet pay zero attention to the quality of the written word within its pages. I've seen Mark on Angler West Television fishing Shasta with Russ Meyer and he seems like a great guy I'd love to support, but man... PLEASE put some effort into cleaning it up. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted January 31, 2014 Super User Posted January 31, 2014 Not to hi-jack the thread, but has anyone paid any attention to the quality of the articles posted on this site? Glenn is a stickler for proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. Attaboy, Glenn! 2 Quote

I think you both do an awesome job. 2 Quote
KevO Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 This was the first BAM I had purchased. It's never been on the magazine rack around here. I was very impressed with their articles and the winter tactics has been very helpful. I love throwing the float and fly as well as the blade baits and jerkbaits in the winter. I think I will buy a subscription, it's gotta be cheaper than $7.99 an issue. Quote

BassnChris Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Spelling and grammar bother me a great deal. I look past it when an individual is trying to convey something and I don't judge. But a magazine, newspaper (professionals) I have no tolerance for mistakes like that. An occasional mistake I can understand I guess........but too many and I will give up on them! Yes..........Glenn and Mike do a GREAT job! Thanks guys Quote

Super User Sam Posted February 13, 2014 Super User Posted February 13, 2014 Very good magazine chocked full of articles. Do you guys remember the young man with the 50-letter last name that was asking us for information and then penning an article using what we told him? Have not seen any articles from him in BAM in a few months. Hope he is OK and is doing a lot of bass fishing to obtain the experience to continue his writing career. Quote

Brian Needham Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 x2. In all seriousness, these are basic junior high level grammatical errors. maybe that is the issue...... In high school journalism class we were taught to write on a 6th grade level.......EH OH!!!! Quote
AQUA VELVA Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Wow, never read a BAM. Have subscribed to In-Fisherman but did'nt care for it. Been getting Bassin' magazine for quite a few years but it seems like it's getting thin on articles and heavy on advertising lately. Will have to look for BAM. Quote
plumworm Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I read about 100-125 books a year. I was a proof reader for a good friend, who wrote 7 books. Maybe some of you know him as the author of the "Major" back page stories in "Shooting Sportsman" Magazine, Galen Winter. It is not that tough to edit and correct an article. Most folks who publish a magazine should have enough editorial skills to correct basic spelling and grammar errors. If you publish a story without at least editing the spelling and grammar, you are doing a lousy job of editing and your magazine should suffer. Quote
The Rooster Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I find magazines and newspapers with spelling errors and other mistakes very hard to read just due to trying to keep up with what's being said. Actually using the wrong words from not understanding differences in such words as due vs. do, words such as to, too, and two, causes my brain to momentarily derail and I have to back up, reread it slowly to get past that hiccup, and then move on with a renewed sense of what the author is trying to say again. When this happens, the enjoyment is lost. 1 Quote
