Crankhead Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I started looking for a bait casting rod to use for lipless and small cranks. I'm a St Croix guy so I did look at their glass rods. I was on the Chicagoland fishing show exhibitors list checking to see if St Croix would be at the show when I found a short video w/KVD talking about his new redesigned Quantum KVD Tour cranking rod. It's a composite/glass rod made to use for small cranks and lipless cranks. I didn't know that there were comp/glass rods made for crank baits. I'd like to hear from anyone who has used this rod for lipless and which model did you get? I looked on St Croix site, found glass but no composite/glass rods. Is there any other rod I should be looking at? Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted January 18, 2014 Super User Posted January 18, 2014 Any glass or composite rods will be heavy, the only difference in weight is because Dobyns makes use of S-Glass while the KVD rods are E-Glass and feel like the Lamiglas cranking rods. I have an old Quantum Tour USA edition E-Glass rod that I love, it was made in America with a blank by Lamiglas and has the same action as the Excel glass rod. The only knock on Dobyns is they are way overpriced for a rod made overseas, go to Tackle Warehouse, the old Model KVD cranking rods are on sale and you can get one for less than 100 bucks, the difference is some cosmetics and different guides but the blanks are the same. If you're set on a composite rod, Phenix X series are awesome and Powell makes some nice composite sticks as well in both the Endurance and Inferno series. They will both be better built rods than those Quantum KVD rods. Why no St. Croix graphite Avid or Premier mod fast cranking rods? Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted January 19, 2014 Super User Posted January 19, 2014 If your a St Croix fan, you won't be dissapointed in the graphite cranking rods they make. I had a couple and they were/are worlds lighter than similarly spec'd glass or glass/graphite comp. rods of similar lengths and powers. They have all the advantages of glass, with the feel and light weight of graphite.I won't (if I can help it) ever crank with glass after using graphite cranking rods. Quote

Then there are the "Mojo Glass crankster" rods which are glass rods, the 6'10" M, the 7'4" M, and the 7'8" MH. Quote
