I got a Lowrance elite 4x fish finder for christmas (along with 4 $25 gift cards to bass pro on top of the one i already had), but I was looking on youtube at the 4x dsi and it looked pretty sweet and I was thinking about taking mine back and getting the dsi. Does anyone know anything about the down scanning imaging? Would it be worth the extra $40-$50 (in gift cards) i would be spending on it?       Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :hangloose:

I agree. Definitely get the dsi version. Makes finding bottom structure very easy. If you can afford it cabelas has the elite 4hdi with lake map pro for 299. That's a killer small setup. I have the elite 7x hdi and I and wish I had the gps.

If I were you I'd step up to the DSI. Down imaging is definitely an advantage to have. It helps you determine what your actually looking at on your screen.

I'm just the opposite I had the DSI only unit, didn't like it, and took it back to get the conventional sonar instead. I did not like the lack of colors. It is hard to see fish on, and you have to be moving.  The lakes I fish don't have a lot of items on the bottom that I need to see details.  The new Lowrances Elite 4s have both DSI and traditional sonar. That combination is much better. When there is something you want details on, you can switch to DSI and back to regular sonar when you want to see fish better .

Scott....I believe with the DSI models you can choose which frequency you want to see. I have mine setup split screen so I get downscan on one and traditional sonar on the other. You can also overlay them to get the best of both worlds.

Yes, NOW, you can. Previous models of the 4 series offered DSI or traditional sonar not both.

Scott, thanks for the clarification! I did not know that.
