Hyrule Bass Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 So last week i had a terrible case of the flu, had to miss a whole week from work. luckily i was able to do some work from home and get a few hours, but i have never been so sick in my entire life. for the first 4 days i was balled up in a corner of my bed sleeping, its about all i could do. i drank plenty of fluids, but very little came back out lol. fever, cold and hot flashes, sweating uncontrollably at times. i felt fortunate there was very little chest congestion and i could breath through my nose. i did have very little appetite, and even then i didnt want to eat, everything tasted nasty and it was just hard to eat. initially i was taking nyquil and alkaseltzer cold plus before i was able to get some tamiflu. thank god for tamiflu, it knocked out all of the worst symptoms in a couple days. this week i am back at work, but im still not 100%. im low on energy and experiencing some light headedness at times. and i certainly want to take a couple naps a day lol. but im fighting through, and feeling a little better everyday. eating is no longer a problem. my energy seems to be improving. ill tell you what though, these new age flus going around are no joke. i hadnt had the flu in years, and it was never this bad. i remember growing up as a kid and getting the flu. we got some cough syrup for medicine. and vicks vaporub that we used to smear on our neck and chest, and maybe a little dab under the nostrils. and some ginger ale to drink. a few days later you were fine. im confident that none of that would help much with the strain of flu im getting over now, it was just way too powerful. now that im back at work, im paranoid as hell everytime someone coughs, i do not want to get sick again. has anyone else been hit hard with the flu this year? all this makes me reconsider my stance on the flu shot and perhaps i should be getting one even though i never have... Super User deaknh03 Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 I was about to post something similar. Out of commission here since last Saturday, and my fever came back last night. Usually I'm sick for a day maybe 2, not 6. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 I haven't had the flu in over a decade - since I started getting a flu shot. Since you already got the flu once, you can't get it again. But you can get any other number of nasty colds that are out there. Your best defense is to wash your hands frequently, and don't touch your face. 1 Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 I know A LOT of people who are suffering with this, and many of them got a flu shot. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 Many get the shot way too late. It takes 4-8 weeks after the shot for your body to build up antibodies. That means you need to get it early, like September, to be covered for the holidays. I know plenty that wait until December to get it - too late, according to my docs. 1 Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 i got the whole house sick, a couple of them had a flu shot, but they didnt get nearly as sick as i was. not sure exactly when they got their flu shot though. the two that didnt have a flu shot didnt get nearly as sick as i was either. like you jfrancho, i hadnt had the flu in probably a decade or longer, except ive never had a flu shot. the flu out there today is definately stronger than any flu i had growing up though... sorry to hear your fever has come back deak. after getting rid of my fever and getting my appetite back i felt like something was still lingering that could cause my flu to recur, so far it hasnt though and that feeling is going away every day. see if you can get some tamiflu from the doctor, that stuff works and is worth every penny it costs... Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 Holy moly the timing of this is right on. My wife and I have been sick with the flu and it's after effects for the last 3 weeks. Sounds similar to what you had. Four days of feeling like crap. Followed by a bad cough, not too congested in the chest. We went through 3 types of medication to clear it up. I've never been so sick in my life. I've had the flu before but never like this. Locally a few people actually died from it. This year we also forgot or kept putting off the flu shot. Normally get it in October. That, I assure you, will never happen again. Get better! Quote
Smokinal Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 If I post in this thread will it increase my odds for getting the flu? Hope not, either way, I hope you both (Red and Deak) feel better soon. Take care guys. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 i got the whole house sick, That is the worst! I'm a big baby when I'm sick, and it stinks when you infect the ones that take care of everything (by that I mean wife/gf, lol). It's tough when the kids get sick, too. Mostly because they usually don't start until your feeling better. Quote
aceman387 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I hate to sound like some kind of anal nutbag about germs, but this time of year i walk around the house with clorox clean up and a wash rag and spray anything from door knobs to faucet handles, fridge handles, remotes keys, phones, computer keyboards etc. Anything i make contact with when i get home from being out in the public. Knock on wood ,i haven't had the flu in years. I think my intake of evan williams bourbon has been a boost to my immune system , 1 Quote
Super User Root beer Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 I haven't had a flu shot in 7 years. Haven't had the flu either in this span. *knocking on wood* Get well soon and stay the heck away from me. 1 Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 I think my intake of evan williams bourbon has been a boost to my immune system , Well I can tell you Tequila does no ward off the flu. Maybe I need to drink more bourbon. 2 Quote
nick76 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Ok... so you will all think that my wife and I are bonkers, but this is the product that we use around our house when someone has the flu. It will work for most any flu like virus and we swear by it. When the H1N1 flu was the latest pandemic we used this on our two sons who tested positive. Both had their symptoms resolve in less than 12 hours and were back to normal function within 24 hours. It was recommended by a chiropractor friend of ours and we have since passed it on. We get it Wal-Mart or a local pharmacy of your choice. It is best to take it as soon as you feel symptoms, but it will work even after an extended delay to reduce the symptoms. It is all natural and no side-effects. It has a sugary taste and no after taste. Just my 2 cents. http://www.oscillo.com/ Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 Well I can tell you Tequila does no ward off the flu. Maybe I need to drink more bourbon. i had been using moonshine for years to ward off sickness. anytime i felt like something was coming on id take a few shots of moonshine and i would be fine. and i mean the real moonshine made out in the woods, not the store bought stuff. i tell you what, it didnt help me this time one bit... thats interesting nick, i will have to try and remember that... Super User Bankbeater Posted January 19, 2014 Super User Posted January 19, 2014 Last time I had a virus was close to 10 years ago, but it wasn't the flu. I was the only one to get it and after the fever broke it hurt my insides to eat anything but fruit for 2 days. Quote
aquaholic Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 The last time i had the flu was probably around 10 years ago as well. Oh man it was terrible. I couldnt eat anything with out getting sick from both ends. I felt like i had to learn how to rewalk afterwards because i spent so much time in bed. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 20, 2014 Super User Posted January 20, 2014 This flu is no joke. After 3 weeks we feel about 75%. Slowly getting better. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 20, 2014 Super User Posted January 20, 2014 Lots of people with horror stories with this flu strain. I'm glad you are feeling better. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 20, 2014 Super User Posted January 20, 2014 I don't understand why getting the flu shot isn't the most important thing everyone does? It does not cover every strain of the flu just the strains they design it for or what strains of flu they think will be the worst that particular year... Some years it doesn't work but if it works once every 10 years I'm running to get my shot every year! Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 20, 2014 Super User Posted January 20, 2014 Tequila, bourbon or any other kind of spirituous beverages isn´t going to kill the bug, what they can do is help you forget you got it, a few shots and you won´t care if you got the flu. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 it is an odd one this year- two men, one in his 30's and one in his 40's has died here in town from it- hit front page of the paper today- no underlying conditions. And here I get my shot every year just so I don't have to miss any work! Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 after two weeks im confident im 100% over this bout of flu. Other than my voice still being a little scratchy from coughing so much, im good, i did lose my voice mostly for 2-3 days early last week. i certainly was well enough to go bowling saturday night followed by a trip to a local *ahem* gentleman's club *ahem* maybe next fall i will break down and get a flu shot... Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 21, 2014 Global Moderator Posted January 21, 2014 Last time I was really sick was the last time I got the flu shot. Haven't had one since and so far haven't had the flu or whatever I had since then. I have to credit my high exposure to every nasty cold/flu virus known to man at my work with building up my immune system I believe. Quote

Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 25, 2014 Super User Posted January 25, 2014 Ugh. Hang in there guys. My wife and I are still not 100%. Coughing a bit. Over the worst. Fortunately we had the luxury to be able to stay home for 3 weeks to get over the worst. Quote
