Pat3697 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 What does this effect? Is it safe to fish? How does this effect or infect the fish? Quote
Mike2841 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Safe to fish, but not safe to eat the fish. Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 Toledo Bend have had a band on eating fish for 20 some odd years. The research shows mercury levels so small that one would have to eat 5 lbs of filets monthly. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 Most high metcury warnings on the Great Lakes advise not eating said fish more than once a month. Pregnant women excluded. Quote
Loop_Dad Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 What does this effect? Is it safe to fish? How does this effect or infect the fish? Mercury in the water will be passed up the food chain and accumulate in the fish's body over time. So bigger (older) the fish, the more mercury in the fish. If you eat contaminated fish, the mercury is now accumulated in your body, which 'can' make you sick, depending on the amount. If you get sick from Mercury, it is horrible. In our county, all of the lakes are posted with sign, not to eat. They stopped stocking trout, because of that too. But actually just stocked trout has almost no mercury in them. Some people completely ignore such signs. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 Toledo Bend you would have to eat 8 ozs 5.8 times a month or 48 ozs/3 lbs. Do y'all understand how much 3 lbs of filets is? That's just meet minimum safety requirements set forth by our government. Quote
Super User geo g Posted January 16, 2014 Super User Posted January 16, 2014 Here in South Florida we have the states highest levels of mercury and other contaminents due in part to the sugar cane industry dumping into the everglades. I think it has helped the fishing in South Florida by promoting catch and release. Fish look healthy, but I dont know anyone keeping fish anymore. Every ramp had a warning sign telling you about the dangers of eating these fish. It has been good for our sport. Fish normally taken are regularly being thrown back to catch another day. As sick as it may sound there is some benefit to the polution problem. Quote
Pat3697 Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 So it doesn't effect fish or cause death...this pond I have in mind has bass which I wouldn't eat anyways But I'd like to know there's fish in the pond before I fish it lol Quote

Super User Catt Posted January 17, 2014 Super User Posted January 17, 2014 Go online and look up methylmercury. No goggle the mercury levels in your body of water! Another fine example of "science" @ work! Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 17, 2014 Super User Posted January 17, 2014 No mercury warnings where I live and fish. The OP needs to educate himself as to what mercury poisioning is and what types of fish may be harmful to eat and where those fish come from. A little knowledge can be dangerous. The commercial swordfish business for example was damaged unnecessarily due to false mercury contamination reports and just now starting to recover a decade later. Tom Quote
AQUA VELVA Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Eating fish with high mercury levels can lead to memory loss and in some cases also lead to memory loss! Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted February 22, 2014 Super User Posted February 22, 2014 The Mother Lode lakes around here are incredibly high in mercury due to the contaminants and techniques used in the Gold Rush era. Only rarely will I even keep a trout to smoke and fortunately I'd let the bass go regardless. Quote
fishinthedacks Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Scary the healthiest protein for us to eat can be dangerous? All meats pose a threat but we make a big deal about mercury but still eat chicken which "can" contain salmonella, or beef with mad cow etc. Quote
