SCangler91 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 About to get one on these to put on a 7ft. Veritas or Ghost to use for frog fishing with an occasional A-Rig throw. I'll have 65lb. power pro spooled on as well. Just curious what you guys may like or dislike about the reels listed. Thanks in advance. Quote
JeziHogg Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Personally i'd go with the Revo S, but I would rethink using that rod to throw a-rigs. Quote
Cgrinder Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I'd be looking for used or sale reels at that price point. None of the reels listed really wow me. Quote
zachb34 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 See if you can find a citica E series I have 4 and have put them through a lot ,and they are tough Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted January 13, 2014 Super User Posted January 13, 2014 I have both the Revo S 3rd Gen and the Lews tournament MG. Hands down the Tournament MG for a frogging reel, given the options. I enjoy my Revo S, please don't misunderstand me. But the Revo S, serves as a light soft plastic reel than frogging reel. It doesn't have the necessary muscle. The MG does. I can't speak for the other reel you mentioned. Quote

mjseverson24 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 i would probably go for the lews the bigger handles will make a difference when they are thick in the slop. I also would not suggest this set up for A-rigs just not powerful enough in my opinion. the citica E with hawgtech handle would also be a good option. Mitch Quote

Mitch If I throw an A-rig it'd be the smaller 3-arm one or one of the new Boo Rigs. I love topwater though so it'll mainly be a frogging rod with a chance to use some heavy jigs if a situation presents itself. Quote
Grantman83 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 The mg has a deep spool that can hold a lot of heavy braid which u need for frogging. The heavy drag and longer handle will help as well. It's smooth and casts a long ways as well. Quote
BenBassmaster Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Revo S for me! Great reel, there's one in flea market for $80 since your a bargainer. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Any one of these reels is up to the task. It comes down to personal preference for features and what you can get the best deal on. Personally, I prefer cent. braking for example which would rule out the MG. 1 Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted January 14, 2014 Super User Posted January 14, 2014 How's that? Are you confused enough yet....lol. They're all the best, they're all the worst. Any of them will do the job. I would choose something else....WHEW!!!!! Hootie 2 Quote

I had originaly glossed over this comment, but I had to pump the breaks and go back to it............I just can't let something that stupid go by with out further comment or clairification. 1 Quote

Yeah I like the idea of a heavy duty handle, but the Revo S actually has a heavier drag at 20lbs versus the MG's 14lb. Having a tough time deciding between these two. EDIT: Going with the Lew's Tournament MG. Can't go wrong either way and I've been eager to try out a Lew's reel. Quote
The Young Gun Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 My tournament mg is completely awesome. It works awesome for frogging and punching. Something about the handles and just the feel is awesome. Even though it only has magnetic braking it works just fine for me. Quote

I've heard so many good things about Lews products that I had to give it a go. Quote

Having a tough time deciding between these two. I highly doubt the Revo S has 20lbs of drag. TT did a test on the STX and Winch and none of them came close. They all measured closer to 10-12lbs of drag. Are all the Revo's rates at 20lbs? http://www.tackletour.com/reviewaburevogen3winchpg2.html http://www.tackletour.com/reviewaburevostxgen3.html Quote
Grantman83 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Don't forget the mgx review that measured at 5lb versus the stated 12lb Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted January 15, 2014 Super User Posted January 15, 2014 Citica is my suggestion.... Right now they are poping up on close out for cheap! Quote
Mike2841 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 See if you can get your hands on the reels first. The lews tournament mg fits my hand perfectly. Also I wouldn't get too caught up in the drag, if you've ever tried to measure out the drag on a reel you would be surprised how strong even 5 lbs of drag is. Quote

And you'd also be suprised how far short some reels fall of what they advertise as "max drag". I have been on to care about drag all that much, but some people do. Quote
Mike2841 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Maybe they measure "max drag" with most of the line out because the less line in the spool the stronger the drag Quote
