Whoa Wasnt Expecting This...

Picked up a mixed lot of Spinnerbaits on Ebay recently. They arrived today. Included was this Monster 1oz Single Willow or Colorado bladed (interchangeable, came with 2 blades) spinnerbait.

The blades look freakishly huge to what im used to.

Guessing this is a deepwater bait? What gear ratio reel and power rod would be necessary to turn that Colorado blade?

Ive seen early SK spinnerbaits with red plastic "Grass Bells" on them for weeds...this one pictured has a metal grass bell...

I don't have any answers to your questions. But I love the  " As seen on TNN cable TV " that was back in the day.

You can fish it deep but the willow blade looks to be a #7 or #8 and I can't see the Colorado blade. In order to keep it down you need to reel slow, I don't do spinnerbaits beyond 10' but I know someone who does and he fishes them like a crankbait with a 5.1:1 gear ration reel and just slowly cranking them over bottom cover and ledges. I would use a heavy power rod unless you have a really stout MH.

Though nicely packaged, that willow blade appears to be wildly oversized; looks like a flasher.

 

I doubt the bait will even fish correctly.

 

I fish spinner baits deep quite often and in order for the bait to fish effectively while maintain depth, there must be a balanced combination of bait & blade shape / size.  Slightly undersized blades and slightly heavier baits are routinely more effective for me.

That size and style is finding it's way into the saltwater striper crowd here in New England.

It will have some lift to it with the big blade, so switch to a smaller blade like A-Jay mentions to keep it down. You may have to retrieve a bit faster, but bang as many obstructions as you can and you'll have fun with that!

I'd guess that you're right about it being a bait designed to be slow rolled in deep water. The Ledgebuster spinnerbaits that I have are all around an ounce and have very large #7 or #8 willowleaf blades like that bait but the wire form is much larger to give the blade room to spin.
