BuckMaxx Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I was thinking about this topic yesterday. I was looking at the save phace masks and I am curious as to why more guys don't wear helmets when running their bass boats. There have been times running in the rain or late in a flight and just get beat to death. Our bass boats get bigger and faster, more idiots are on the water running around on jetskis. I have read all "whatifs" and "couldbe" scenarios but keep going back to we are concerned about our safety when riding a atv motorcycle or bicycles but we don't in our bass boats. I wanted to get your guys take on it. I purchased a full faced modualar helmet yesterday probably won't wear it all the time but I believe it is $50 well spent. Quote
pancityhanman Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 full face helmet, nothing better for the cold and rain in my opinion. 55 mph feels like you are standing still. have used them for years. Quote
jhoffman Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Exact reason I didnt sell my helmets when I sold the bike. I wonder if its a weight thing, I dont think they would take on water but I have never dove in with one. Getting back to the top could be a disaster waiting to happen??? Quote
Koofy Smacker Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I love my Save Phace. That said I dont think I would like the full motorcycle helmet on a hot 100 degree summer day. The Save Phace allows you to put it over anything, even sock hats. Most of the time when running I just use sunglasses though. I do see where you are coming from though with the protection aspect of the actual helmet, but your most likely to hit water unless something seriously went wrong. Then again I know at 60mph water feels like concrete. Quote
RyneB Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I love my Save Phace, I cant believe I went a year without it. I hit a seagull this past year at 62 MPH. It hit my front hummingbird, then my windshield, then my face. Not saying the the mask saved my life, but I don't think I would of wanted to hit that seagull with my bare face. Not to mention, it pooped all over my windshield and it sprayed onto my mask. So best case scenario, I would have had seagull poop all over my face and most likely in my mouth. 1 Quote
BuckMaxx Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 The last post is what makes me want to wear a helmet even more. Thanks for the description of the events. The least of my concerns is going skipping across the water at 65. I have faceplanted many times at 40 on skis and can tell you it hurts like a mother! I contemplated all the scenarios and decided on a modular over a full face. With the modular the whole front lifts up. Hopefully there would be a better chance of it ripping up on impact with the water.\ I am more concerned with objects flying around in the boat or slamming my forehead into the wheel on a roller hit wrong. If a jet ski hits you that console or a save phace is going to help you. Quote
kickbasskid Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Same reason I think for not wearing a full face mask on a motor cycle. The chances of things hitting you in the face are very slim as that windshield on the front of your console is there to protect you. Not only do some come pretty close to your face but they also force air up and past your face greatly reducing risk of being hit. In terms of collisions I think its the same reason we don't wear helmets in cars. Your screwed either way so why spend the money? Quote
tbone1993 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 In warm weather I dont see a need for a save phace. Once it drops into the 40s or we get rain/snow it is the best thing to have. The only other time would be in high winds and rough seas to key the spray off of your face. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 18, 2014 Global Moderator Posted January 18, 2014 I bought a Save Phace at the Classic last year, don't know how I lived without one for winter fishing. Even though my little tin boat only gets around 30mph, when it's in the teens it's really painful to run too far without it, even worse if I get any spray over the side like I often do. Really nice for night fishing too if there's lots of bugs out, you think rain hurts, take a junebug to the face while you're running Quote
