What style and brand of straight shank flipping and Pitchin hooks does everyone use? I really can't stand paying the high prices of Trokar and Gamakatsu hooks but it doesn't seem like there is much else available.

I bought some  VMC flipping hooks last season but never got around to using them. They seem to be pretty decent.

Those hooks arent worth skimping on... Trokar all the way. Bait keeper is worth every penny over them. The gamakatsus fall off in a few flips

While I am not a fan of these kind of hooks, I have tried all the major brands, and the best bang for the buck is the VMC. Gamakatsu keeper falls off, and the Trokar points don't last. VMC has neither of these problems, and is a good heavy wire hook, not to mention they are a little less expensive.

Yeah I'm definitely not tryin to be skimpy but trokar and gama are over a dollar a hook. VMC seem like the best buy for the price and durability right now

Agree, not in just the straight shank hooks either, but there whole line of "Ike approved" stuff is great.

I agree with this also, their offset hooks and finesse hooks are awesome too

I've been using Academy H2O hooks & after 6 months no problems, not even keeping the bait in place.

The Gamakatsus and the VMC's are good hooks but I really dig the Trokars. They are ridiculously sharp. The only complaint I have is that they tend to poke through the bait to easy when fishing heavy cover. It takes some playing around to figure out the hook point placement to prevent this.

I like Trokar and VMC, but the VMC weedless wacky rig hook is horrible

I bought some vmc, haven't used them yet tho. Im about to get my snell on!

I've tried both the VMC and the Trokar flipping hooks and I have the say the Trokar is way better. Yes they are expensive, but they are just so much sharper. I ordered 4 packs of 15 5/0 Trokar dipping hooks while Tackle Warehouse had a sale... Once I runs out of these though, I'll probably go to VMC.

I like the Trokar TK130, the Gamakatsu hook keeper slides down on hook sets but the Trokar is money and I have had any points roll on me yet but I didn't get any until they were on the market for about a year or more. I hate paying that but I don't lose many of those and I don't use them all the time either, a regular offset Gamakatsu supeline hook is fine for just about everything in heavy cover, the only time I use the straight shank is for thick creature baits in heavy cover like a Sweet Beaver.

again... mustad has large keeper that can't move and is extra heavy. stays very sharp and is easy to snell. I do want to try vmc but I'll always keep mustad in my box.

I'm not a huge fan of straight shanks while flipping heavy grass but find they work really well for me texas riggin' open water. I've tried a lot of different brands, Gamakatsu and Owner are my favorites. I'm talking about just straight shank worm hooks, not flipping hooks. These versions are smaller in diameter and don't come with any type of "keeper" except two barbs. I then make my own keeper with braid and heat shrink tubing. Very secure rigging of the plastics without much damage and I've never had one slide down the shank.

I've also tried the Owner's in 3X for flipping but still came away with the same results as all the other straight shanks, very poor hookup ratio. As I've said before I know it's me not the hooks but I just can't get the hang of it while flipping. Owner's Twistlock flipping hooks take care of me while flipping though. Anyway guys I just wanted to post a pic of these hooks with my homemade keeper just in case it might help someone else.

I wont spend money on the trokars for EWG hooks or regular hooks but when it comes to flipping, pitching and punching with a stout rod and heavy braid I will. Mainly because I think I have only ever snapped off 2 or 3 of them because normally I just reach down and pull it off the tree.

Are you losing that many to justify cost cutting on it? Thats the way I look at it anyway
