Yakin4bass Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I recently picked a bait caster set up ( bill dance edition) from bass pro. I had one back when I was a wee lad but could never get the hang of it so had a fear of them until recently. Wanted to give it another shot. I've been practicing with it in the yard and took it out fishing twice. The question is can you cast them as far as a spinning real with enough practice? Quote

Preytorien Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Farther. Much farther. X2 And usually much more accurately too Keep at it.....I made the transition to baitcasters this last summer and I am wondering why I took so long to get over my intimidation of them, they're amazing. I still use my spinning rig for ultra-finesse presentations and for panfishing, but the go to rig I use is a baitcaster, it simply works great. Good luck and if you have more questions just ask. Yungun234120 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Actually bought my first bait caster yesterday. I seem to cast my spinning rod more accurately and farther. Like other people mentioned, I guess it just takes time Quote
Loop_Dad Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Yes, practice, but if you are not getting the same distance as spinning after a while, something might not be right... Make sure that you use the lure in the middle of the lure rating of your rod or bit higher when you start out. Make sure to use your thumb on the spool to control, but experiment how much pressure you apply. Play with the break / spool tension to find the right combination so that it is controlling well, but not stopping you from getting the distance. There should be whole bunch of video on youtube out there you can study. Quote
John G Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I have never been able to cast a baitcaster farther than a spinning reel and I consider the distance that I get with my casting reels to be good. I have never used a competition type casting reel or a surf outfit with a few ounces on it but for a bass sized baitcaster compared to a bass sized spinning reel, for me, the spinning reel wins everytime. Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 11, 2014 Super User Posted January 11, 2014 My baitcasting reel accuracy isn't as accurate as with my spinning reels 50 years ago, but then my spinning reel accuracy today probably isn't that good either. As far as distance is concerned, I feel casting distance with baitcast reels is a bit better. Not that I can achieve anywhere near the distance many claim. 100 yards is behind my current abilities with either. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted January 11, 2014 Super User Posted January 11, 2014 Casting distance with a casting reel is directly related to the reel itself and how the brakes are set, quality of the bearings and spool tension. This is not the case with spinning reels. I can cast way further and more accurately with casting gear but that's what I use 99% of the time. Don't worry about distance and just concentrate on your thumb and work toward loosening the brakes little by little, distance will come. Quote

Like other people mentioned, I guess it just takes time Of course its going to take some time. You just bought the b/c yesterday........ and you probably have been using a spinner for years. Comment again in 3 months of consistent b/c use and then tell what you think. 1 Quote
Yakin4bass Posted January 12, 2014 Author Posted January 12, 2014 I've noticed its getting easier to throw it farther but not to the distance of my spinning reels. I've checked out the videos on how too's. I do like the feel of them and plan on mastering it just didn't know the distance ability. Thanks for everyone's input. Quote
