Going Under The Knife Monday Morning

Finally getting my shoulder carved. Too many years of bodybuilding, fishing and throwing tons of BP to my son's baseball team has wrecked my right shoulder. It's been 2 years in the making and it's finally here. The surgery is called Distal Clavicle Excision; where they basically lop off 1/4 to 3/8" off the end of my collar bone where it meets up with the shoulder blade. Excited for having the whole procedure done so I can get back into the gym and hopefully be ready for ice-out in the spring. Anyone else have this done? How did it go for you? I have spoken with 3 others and they said it all came out fine but was the most painful post-op they have had.

Thoughts and prayers are with you. I've had a couple shoulder surgeries but not the one your getting. I'm waiting to get a 3rd to reattach torn muscles to my shoulder blade. Shoulder surgery has the most difficult and intensive recovery of other orthopedic surgeries because the joint is so complicated. Stick to the PT and do the exercises at home. Good Luck

Good luck buddy ... Had a friend do this and he was a million bucks after it was all said and done (rehab etc.).  Just be patient and don't force yourself to do too much too soon.  The fish will be there when you are ready.

I had this surgery done back in 1997 or so.  It is no doubt a painful surgery, there is no way to kill the pain in the bone and it will be sore for up to a year.   With that said the best thing I done was got it out of the sling and started making myself use it for everyday tasks, getting that range of motion back as soon as possible is the key to a quick recovery.  Best of luck, I am happy I had mine done.

I've rehab'd quite a few of those over the years and it's a pretty simple procedure you should do great with. That doesn't mean you're not going to have pain, but you'll definitely be good as new for fishing this spring. Best of luck!

Good luck man.  Be sure you follow your doctor's orders to a "T", regardless of how good you may feel.  Do not rush your rehab.

u guys r the best. my hunt-n-peck is really kickin in now so please excuse the grammer/pucuation. im very right handed. things are going to be ineresting for a little while. lol  all went as planned and im sure the rest will go well to. i cant thank you enough for the kind words, thoughts and prayers. it really keeps you positive.

wen its all said and done, it cud be far worse. at least i hv both arms and will be casting a jerkbait in april!

Did they let you keep the portion of bone that was sawed off?  I would have kept it.
