I want to learn to flip and pitch this up coming season.  Question about hooks?

Is it best to use a EWG hook? Or other type? I purchased some extra firm "flippin" hooks from BPS but these are not EWG.  Will be using jigs but also want to try some T-Rig creature baits and this is where I'm not sure on best style / type of hook.

Thanks.

I use EWG hooks for all of my flipping and pitching.  I would probably use a big stout flipping hook if I was punching mats or something.

Straight shank round bend provides a higher hookup precentage!

The owner 5/0 twistlock flipping hook is amazingly strong, sharp, and easy to rig!  I would not use an EWG hook, use something more straight shanked

4/0 or 5/0 Straight Shank Round Bend and make sure to tie a snell knot. I love pitchin and flippin!

I match the hook to the bait.  Keep in mind, there is no standard for sizes.  I'd use a completely different hook for a 7" worm than I'd use for a beaver type bait.  Owner hooks are about the only brand I'll use these days.  They have a hook for just about every bait out there. If you want specific recommendations for baits, post up what you'll be using.

I usually throw a 4/0 or 5/0 gamakatsu heavy cover or super heavy cover flippin' hook depending on what type of cover or vegetation I'm flipping. I've been messing around with other hooks though because the heat shrink on the gamakatsus will tend to get loose and slide down after a couple of fish. I might have to try out some owner hooks.

I experienced the same thing with the Gamakatsu and switched to the Trokar Flipping hook. While they are expensive and the only Trokar hooks that I will buy again, they are perfect hooks for punching and flipping.

Straight shank hook (Gammy/Trokar) ties with a snell knot. Very high hook to land ratio.

Thank you all for advice!

I plan to likely use the Rage Tail Craw or Rage Tail Lobster -  Also the Havoc Pit Boss - With tugsten weight.

Looked at the Owner style hooks. Look great.  There is a great variety there to choose from.  The ROUND BEND, WIDE GAP and  90° JIG HOOK both look very nice.  Think I'd start with the more standard round bend 90 Jig Hook...

I with you, I've mainly started using a Trokar just for flipping/pitching.

Wait, what? You're going to flip with a 90* jig hook? This:

I dont think you want to do that. That bend and eye will create a block for your hook point. Look at this: This hook design is specific to flipping, and is best used with a snell knot:

Why tie a snell knot? Watch this (1:45):

I personally dont use EWG hooks at all anymore. For bottom-dragging worming, I use 4/0 and 5/0 straight shank hooks.... and I snell it. Hell, I even snell my drop-shot! and I miss VERY few hooksets. I know some guys love EWG hooks. Go buy some and experiement. But as SOON as you miss a hookset with the EWG hooks (and you will), snell a straight shank on...

I wouldn't use a 90* jig hook for flipping/pitching let alone anything else besides molding your own jigs.

I use owner straight worm wide gap xxx strong in 4/0 and 5/0 these are in my opinion the best hooks for flipping / punching also been using 4/0 Trokar flipping hooks they seem to be a good hook also I just haven't used them enough... The owners.... U can't go wrong!

I use the Mustad Denny Braurer flipping hooks. I switched from Trokar because they destroy the plastics way to fast for my liking.  I still have a few which I'll use up at some point but won't be purchasing them again. I always snell my knot as well for flipping/punching.

You know, I've looked at those hooks, but they just seem a little weak... I'm a big fan of owner, I just dont think they make a better flipping hook than gammy....

I use both the EWG and the straight shank hooks. Personally if I am not punching I tend to like the EWG quite a bit more, especially in the 4/0-6/0 sizes. I am not sure where all of the missing fish on EWG comes from I have about an equal strike to land ratio with both types of hooks. I also use a snell on both of them. I personally like the way a bait sits on the EWG a little better than the straight shank flippin hooks.

Another vote for the Owner Zo Wire TwistLOCK flipping hooks. I've tried a lot of different hooks for this purpose and found, for me, there isn't anything close.

I must be the best hook setter/bite detector in the world. I have NONE of these so called hook up issues with EWG hooks. I have tried the straight shank hooks, and I don't like them at all. So it's either a VMC Heavy duty EWG, or Gamakatsu EWG superline for me.  Size depends on the bait. I carry 2/0 - 5/0 with me.

i use the trokar flippin hook best on market imo SHARP!!! SHARP SHARP!!

trokars are sharp but not stronger and they don't last. not worth the $ imo.

farmer: why don't you like straight? heavy cover straight hooks are thick and have baitkeepers. I've never had a problem with ewg either that I've noticed but it doesn't mean it doesn't have flaws.

I don't like the way the bait sits on the hooks, I don't like how much the plastic barbs tear up my baits, and I don't like having another type of hook around taking up space when the heavy wire EWG's I use get the job done for me.

I am with the EWG gang. I am not a fan of j-hooks unless I am pitching into cover. I have been fishing Gami's EWG from size 1 to up to 5/0 for years now. Missing a strike will happen regardless of what type of hooks you prefer. That's just a part of fishing.
