Super User Sam Posted January 15, 2014 Super User Posted January 15, 2014 Roadwarrior is right. You are getting a great deal. Save your pennies and dimes and get your own boat. Quote
jhoffman Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I disagree with the comment about the smaller boats. I've done quite well with a 17ft tin and a 90hp. Our club AOY's Skeeter was out for repairs during 2 tournaments last year. They cashed checks in both tourneys fishing out of a jon boat with a 9.9 and a aerated cooler for a livewell. Depends heavily on the lake itself. Some lakes this club fishes if youre not in one of three holes, you can forget about winning, lack of structure. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted January 15, 2014 Author Posted January 15, 2014 sam... how is it a "great deal" to pay the same tourney fee and get back-boated? it is not a $25 issue. it is the principle. the club is supposed to be for boaters AND non-boaters. i just don't think there is much sportsmanship involved. it is all one-sided in the boaters favor. if i am going to have to compete against them, fishing 2nd to everything and fish at their speed out of the back...reducing my chances. then the non-boater's fee should be less. i know....it is hard for a boater to be on my side....but i am sure many of you have fished out of the back....and understand....this is not a team thing... i just would like the rules to be not so heavily weighted against the non-boater... and if the answer is "buy a boat"....then i am definitely in the wrong club and that perspective is one-sided too... imo.. i thought that most people started out as a non-boater and could appreciate where i am coming from....it is not a "fun" tourney or a "team" tourney.... i respect everyones opinions...that is what i ask for. thanks...i really do appreciate all your comments..... Super User flyfisher Posted January 15, 2014 Super User Posted January 15, 2014 That wouldnt fly with me either. I dropped out of my club this year too, just didnt agree with how they run the show. If youre going to let guys in your club with little boats, theyll NEVER beat a 250 to the top of the lake, never. Final straw for me was having a big bass in the box on a one fish night and everyone else couldnt catch a fish that night so they decided not to weigh. It was the third fish I had in the box, culling twice. Every time we were supposed to fish a lake where I would have any advantage it was canceled and moved to a lake where the big boats had the advantage. I pulled the plug, it was only $10 a day but why just hand over money every week and not stand a chance, thats borderline insane. That would have made me go ballistic.... So what did they do with everyone's tourney fees for the day, give them back? I know if I had been involved and was on the non-winner side i would have walked right up to you and given you my entry fee and said good job. Quote
jhoffman Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 They were in the habit of not collecting it till the weigh in so they didnt have to worry about giving it back. Bass was a big fish too, biggest one I caught all year. I never fished another event with them after it. I built them a brand new website and other members had the audacity to ask what I was doing for the club. Well lets see, I dedicated about 80hrs before the season ever started. Sorry with a 2 year old I cant be here to collect aps every week. It almost became a running joke... "why didnt you come to this event so we could have your money?" I didnt care about the money, I was in it to learn. The guys in the club were some of the most tight lipped individuals you could ever want to be around. They wouldnt tell you NOTHING they did to help them get on fish. Ill fish opens before I ever get in a club like that again. Quote
Brian Needham Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I dont get the "boaters are better" mentality. who buys a boat, depending on others to give them gas and such? I bought my boat cause I wanted it, and wanted to fish when and how I wanted......I didnt buy it to be an ******* and think I am entitled to something. I think some boat owners are just stuck on themselves and most clubs are too. Jon, I think the best thing to move to another club, hopefully a team club (I think they are better) that is if you cant get it to where non boaters fish against each other 2 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 15, 2014 Super User Posted January 15, 2014 Don't think anyone is saying that boaters are "better" only they are at an advantage in getting first shot and good spots. And if they wish they can position the boat to further limit to co-anglers shot at targets. This provides a distinct advantage especially when fishing shallow cover or docks. Find a club which does team tourney's or co-anglers do not compete against boaters. There is a reason their co-angler numbers are so low. As with anything in life some clubs are better than others. Find one that works for what you want to do. Quote

I know that................ I was talking about "bargin being able to fish with someone" and boaters having all the expenses..... basically saying the boater is entitled to boack boat a guy. Thats the way it SOUNDS, I am sure nobody here is arrogent enough to think that, so I might be reading it wrong. only thing I do to my boat is change the foot oil, make sure the oil res is full... I think many boaters get that glitter boat and it blinds their manners. JMO. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted January 15, 2014 Author Posted January 15, 2014 brian...and brian... i agree....i think we are on the same page... hopefully i can persuade enough boaters at the rules meeting in Feb. if not...then i'll just not fish in that club...and hope to find another one that is more non-boater friendly. needless to say... i can't wait for the Roadtrip!! there is no back-boating there at all....it is truly the fishing highlight of the year!! everyone was awesome... Champfishnva Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 jon boats can be found cheap these days Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 23, 2014 Super User Posted January 23, 2014 In our club the nonboater has the right to ask for the front of the boat for half of the day. Works fine. Quote

That is pretty cool. Do people ask for it though or is it kind of one of those rules on the books that nobody really bothers to use? Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted January 23, 2014 Super User Posted January 23, 2014 The club I'm in lets us pick our partners and we keep them for the year. We use the team format and just fish for 1 limit that way an individual can compete as a boater without a co-angler and still have a chance to win. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 23, 2014 Super User Posted January 23, 2014 1. There's a reason that there are three times as many boaters as non boaters. 2. There's a reason there's only 16 people in the club. 3. $25 is nothing for an entry feel. It's so low, I can't see how the contest is competitive. You can't win enough to recoup the cost, so it certainly is not about money. 4. When it really comes down to it, it is about money in tournament fishing, though not always about winning money. My advice: find another club, or find a boating partner to fish in team format tournaments. We even have a club here in central NY that demands that each participant splits time up front, and time in spots. Don't follow the rule, the your non boater doesn't sign your weigh in slip. Like Farmer, I prefer a team format above all others. I'll pass on one of the worst pieces of advice a boater gave me when I fished as a non boater: don't like it? Get your own boat. 1 Quote
bassin is addicting Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 i think i've found another club to fish in. it is pretty close and they fish a lot of the same bodies of water. their meeting is sunday. i'll find out more then. i've talked to one of their guys and told him what is going on in the club i fished in....he said "thats dumb" . so i'm pretty sure i've found another "home". the "team" deal won't work where i have fished...not enough non-boaters... i appreciate all your feedback.. and Francho.......that has been the most popular response from the dip-sticks in the club... "get a boat"... so i'm hoping things work out sunday....and i can say... adios to them 1 Quote
bassin is addicting Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 well....all's well that ends well... met with and joined, a different club sunday. 23 total members. 10 non-boaters...and after talking to a few of them, they get treated well by the boaters. as an added bonus, they fish 4 different places that I have never fished..... the biggest bonus... the last tourney... a 2 day event is on KENTUCKY LAKE!! thanks to all who gave their input....it is appreciated... 2 Quote
Brian Needham Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 sounds to be a solid club! almost split 50/50 plus a 2 day classic at one of the BEST lakes in the country! Quote
wrat Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 if your being backseated say something at the time not later... I fish a club as a boater and its a draw tourney every man against and I do my damnedest to put US BOTH on fish Quote
