Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 9, 2014 Super User Posted January 9, 2014 Does anybody here brew their own beer? I just started, my first batch is in the primary fermenter now (honey brown ale, been in the fermenter for a little over a week now). Going to bottle on the 20th of this month. Should be ready to drink by early-to-mid-February. All this waiting sucks! Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 LOL, I've brewed once before. My sister in law bought me a kit. It tastes completely different then beer you buy. Not a bad taste just different. I hope you made sure everything was clean and sterile. Its cool to watch. I need to brew up a new batch. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 9, 2014 Super User Posted January 9, 2014 Lol, I leave all my beers in the PRIMARY for thirty days! The thinking behind this is that the yeast will actually clean up after itself and produce a better beer. I don't ever use a secondary for your common ale. I go from the primary directly to a keg or in your case bottles. It will normally take another 30 days for it to condition before it's drinkable... I know the wait kills but you can't rush beer I'm guessing you got a extract kit? Local brewshop or online retailer? Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted January 9, 2014 Super User Posted January 9, 2014 Mr. Bush does a fantastic job at satisfying my taste buds and making my lovely wife even more beautiful than I could have ever hoped for !!! I just wish I could remember her name 2 Quote

Got it here: http://www.boomchugalug.com/product/oh-daddy-o-honey-brown-ale/ I have two more extract kits and will probably buy another until I really get the hang of brewing. Quote

Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 12, 2014 Super User Posted January 12, 2014 That's a good looking kit, I'm guessing they say primary for 7-10 days and secondary for the remainder of a month then bottle for 2 weeks then drink? Are you using a carboy for a primary? It's cool to be able to see the yeast working... If you have any questions just ask, I love to talk beer! Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 12, 2014 Author Super User Posted January 12, 2014 Yep, instructions said primary for a week or so to ensure fermentation is complete. Didn't mention secondary. I'm planning on leaving mine in primary for 3 weeks to make sure its nice and clear and the yeast cake is nice and compact. From what I've gathered online secondary isn't really necessary for most beers, unless you are dry hopping or aging with wood or fruit or the like. I've just got one carboy for primary and no secondary. Maybe I'll get another carboy at some point and use it as a secondary, or just have two brews going in primary at the same time. Who knows! This is a pretty fun hobby so far, I think I will enjoy getting into it. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 never had the urge to homebrew any beer. but lately ive really had the urge to build my own still and make some moonshine. i dont want to sell it, just run off a few gallons on occasion for personal use. lots of risks to contemplate though... Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 20, 2014 Author Super User Posted January 20, 2014 I've had that urge too. May act on it now that I have (most) of the equipment. In other news, I bottled my first batch of beer today and I tasted the sample I took out for my hydrometer reading and it tasted great! A little sweet up front (likely due to the priming sugar... also the fact that its a honey brown ale) and kind of bitter on the finish. I am confident these flavors will mellow out a little as the beer ages in bottles. But it tasted good! I'm stoked for it to be carbonated and ready for proper consumption! Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 20, 2014 Super User Posted January 20, 2014 So how many days did you end up letting it set in the primary? 10? I only ask because if it wasn't 100% done you may have made a nice batch of bottle bombs Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 22, 2014 Author Super User Posted January 22, 2014 3 weeks. I wanted to let everything settle out and clear it up a bit. It sure was hard to wait! It's going to be even harder waiting another 3 weeks for them to carbonate. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 22, 2014 Super User Posted January 22, 2014 You should be good to go enjoy!!! Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 23, 2014 Author Super User Posted January 23, 2014 Based on the sample I drew for my gravity readings I think this is going to turn out to be a very good and tasty first brew. I am very excited!! Quote
