I'm looking at buying a humminbird with side scan and was wondering if I should the one with the GPS built in or the external GPS or does it matter and if I should put the bigger unit on the bow or at the console

If you purchase a 2014 year model, you won't have a choice, all of them have internal GPS antennas.

Typically for the best waypoint accuracy based on sonar returns, the GPS antenna should be near the transducer.

If you are getting two of them in different sizes, it depends on your eyesight.

BIGGER is better from a distance in any case, but you may get by the other way.

BTW, Humminibird's trade name for the technology is Side Imaging.

I was kinda thinking it would be ez to see the bigger one on the bow considering your standing

I was looming at them on eBay and some come with the external GPS but there not much cheeper, I was just wondering if it helped any or not

The 2014 models of discontinued models are about $500 less MSRP.

An example is the 898c SI Combo and 898c HD SI Combo MSRP is $1499.99

Their replacement 899ci HD SI Combo is $999.99

To tell if a Humminbird unit has an internal or external GPS antenna, the internal antenna model will have ( i ) in the model number and Combo at the end of the name. The external antenna model will not the the ( i ) and will have Combo at the end of the name.

( c ) means color display

( i ) means internal GPS antenna

Personally, I'd suggest running your bigger unit at the dash. The reason being, that's where you're doing most of your "searching" from. You can get more detail on the larger screen and really get a good idea of what your looking at. Once you find it you can mark it and when you start fishing you're already fishing in a much more condensed area. You already know what it is your fishing, and you can run your smaller front graph zoomed in a lot more just to get a confirmation that it is there and to position your boat from that.

That is the opposite of what most experienced Side Imaging owners do since they are searching with Side Imaging as they are fishing.

I'm sure a lot of it is personal preference and fishing style. I'm just going off of what's worked best for me and off of what the Humminbird regional rep explained. Also, seeing the way many tournament boats are rigged they have the smaller of their two units up front unless they're running two of the same size or more.
