WiregrassRiverRat Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I am just now getting into tourney fishing and when fishing a trail.. you cant just decide to stay home when it rains.. so I am going to invest in a good rain suit this year. I currently use a rain jacket to keep the top half dry from REI.. but end up with a soggy bottom by the end of the day... at the least I want a good bib. One thing that is huge to mention.. I live in South Alabama.. and while it was cold today.. it isnt odd to have days in the upper 90s with 80-90% humidity.. the air is so thick that your boat can float on it.. and I like to wear shorts and flops and a long t-shirt.. what I really want is a bib that will work in hot and cold/mostly hot and a rain jacket that will work when going 70 across the water.. and keep my dry and warm.. I will probably strip it most of the year and just wear the bib.. I know the 100mph and cabela suits exist.. just wanting to know what would be best for my application. THANKS! Quote
Super User slonezp Posted January 8, 2014 Super User Posted January 8, 2014 Cabelas Guide Wear is still on sale for 50% off. I bought a set 2 months ago 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted January 8, 2014 Super User Posted January 8, 2014 In my opinion a set of Frogg Toggs would work for you. They are pretty light, I wear mine in the summer over shirts & shorts during rain storms. They will stop the wind and they are pretty warm when you wear a couple of layers underneath. If you are the kind of guy who is routinely hard on clothes, you will tear it up in a season or so. I am not that tough on my clothes, so my current suit has lasted 4 years now and it is still in good shape. I still have as a back up suit the one I replaced it with. I only replaced it because I liked the color of the newer one better and it was on sale. If you want something a little more wear resistant, then lightweight gore tex suits are available, but they cost more. I have a lighter weight 10x Gore tex jacket & pants suit that I got in 1999 and it still works good and looks ok. I've also got a set of uninsulated Guide Wear, but I think that is a little too heavy for your climate. Quote
BenB54 Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I really like my columbia omni heat gale warning bib and parka. It keeps me bone dry, breathes well when it's warm, and keeps me warm when it's cold. 1 Quote
tbone1993 Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I really like my columbia omni heat gale warning bib and parka. It keeps me bone dry, breathes well when it's warm, and keeps me warm when it's cold. x2 on this. You do need to layer with these but they do keep you very dry and are very well made. I also have the regen rain pant and hydro tech packable jacket. The packable jacket does get very hot so it isnt the best in hot summer months but at least you are dry. I also recommend you buy some boots and break them in. Bibs are great but once your feet are cold you wont want to fish anymore Quote
Fish'N Impossible Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I use the Gander Mountain Guide series rain suit, its light enough not be overly hot and wind proof. It also has hand gaurds built into the sleeves of the jacket. Whole set runs $150 not on sale. that sbibs and jacket. also light enough that if you wanted to wear it other than fishing pretty nice then too. Quote

LOVE THEM and wear them from october to march! Quote
McAlpine Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I had a pair of the frog toggs mentioned above and they don't breath at all. You won't want that in Alabama. While its an expensive setup I suggest the 100mph suit. You want wind proof breathable gortex then that's the ticket. Love mine. Quote
deputybc Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Dont get the Bone Dry from bass pro. I had 3 sets of this crap and they leak worse than going with out it. I'm looking for a set that will also work. I have a pair of Bps Goretex bibs that are the great but they quit using goretex and went strickly to Bone Dry. Thanks for the article seen some good advice. Quote
Bassfink86 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Try looking at the rainsuits by STORMR, they are on the expensive side but they are really nice and have really good reviews Quote
gobig Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I have spent more time in the outdoors than most people. My past jobs and hobbies put me there. As of now there are only two products I will buy when it comes to water proof rain gear. Columbia's omnitech and goretex are the only way to go. As mentioned the BPS gear and cabelas guide select are great products. My current set up is a Columbia parka and un-insulated guide select bibs. Quote
Slade House Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 buy the REI 100% goretex pants, i had the same problem with my REI jacket, just go buy their pants. Or if you can , find a north face outlet and buy goretex from them. I only wear north face when fishing (cause they have an outlet near me that's insanely cheap) and I swear by my goretex north face shoes, they're completely waterproof (even when i submerge my entire shoe) Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 9, 2014 Super User Posted January 9, 2014 Cablea's guide wear didn't fit right so I bought BPS 100 mph gortex and haven't looked back. Quote
Super User webertime Posted January 9, 2014 Super User Posted January 9, 2014 Try looking at the rainsuits by STORMR, they are on the expensive side but they are really nice and have really good reviews They feel like a weighted vest on and are HOT. In Alabama he'd die in them. Yes I've tried them. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted January 10, 2014 BassResource.com Administrator Posted January 10, 2014 Have you looked at the gear on http://www.gore-tex.com/products/outerwear/ ? Like some of the above, a bit pricey but well worth it! And with Gore-Tex, you'll never get wet. Quote
AMAC Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Have you considered Simms? They have some suits that are quite expensive and some sets that are about the same as the BP 100 mph suit..... Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I use military gortex. Works great. Quote
WiregrassRiverRat Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 thanks for all the suggestions...I guess I still have alot of research to do as most everyone recommended something different.. Quote
basshole8190 Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I use a cheap academy wind breaker suit its around 25$ for a set its thin but windproof and breathable and waterproof it is what i use in the rain all year and when its cold i layer up underneath and i stay warm Quote
