Any thoughts on this boat?

http://swv.craigslist.org/boa/4271909988.html

I've never had a boat before and am looking for a cheap starter.  My small truck (04 nissan frontier v6) should be able to haul this smaller boat better than 19 footers (and it'll fit in the garage).  The 50 HP motor is a bit concerning, but I don't have experience with outboards and really don't need to start with 200hp.  I would like to get into tournament fishing either this year or next, but I think this boat will suffice.

Should I ask for more pictures, especially of the motor?

Thanks fellas

You should have it looked at by a mechanic.

I'd ask to take it to a mechanic and verify that the only issues are the ones he stated.

I am by no means an expert on boats but there are a few things about the listing that concern me.

  1. nobody is that nice about getting something fixed covering the costs and your time to get it done-most would use this as a bargaining chip when negotiating the price of the boat
  2. Why only a picture of half the boat
  3. the whole "Buyer is responsible for delivery and all legal documentation at the DMV."

Is he saying there is no title for the boat and if so, why?

worth taking a look at but all those things make me skeptical if there is something hiding...

It is from Southern wv...so it's probably stolen...lol jk (sort of). I'll ask for more pictures and info.

I have an 01 640 lx but it has a 75 HP motor. I have always seen these boats around $4000 so this boat is really cheap even with needing repairs. The 640 is a great starter boat but I would really check into it being so cheap and make sure something shady isn't going on. This boat will be rather slow planing and on top end with the 50 HP but it should do fine.

Should I ask for the hull Id number?

My first thought is some sort of scam.  Seems like a lot of red flags here the picture or lack there of, the price, no phone number in listing, grammar.  I'd be careful on this one. If it does turn out to be legit, get it checked out by a good mechanic.

For a starter boat , it would be a great opportunity , sounds like it's a complete package for next to nothing basically , sounds as if it has been sitting for more than its been fishing also , but I agree , a lot of red flags here , if there are any marine service centers around your area , definitely have it checked out first , if your close to the seller , it wont hurt to go look at it first and see if your even interested in the thing , check with the marine service center and get an estimate on what it would cost to look it over for you and get a more accurate assessment of any other issues , see if the seller will let you , or the seller ( if your not comfortable towing ) take it there first before any monetary talk is taken place , if he or she hesitates at all , walk away , there are plenty of boats on the market , don't settle for the first one if you don't want to , be patient , ask around for a good reputable repair shop and be comfortable with your decision with that first , if they are good , their name will come up many times , since you have no experience in purchasing a boat , you must be confident in the people to give you an honest assessment about a purchase you are considering .

Good luck and be safe !!!

I agree with flyfisher....there are some serious red flags.  Especially the "Buyer is responsible for delivery and all legal documentation at the DMV."  Be very careful on this one.

Hey man looks like it could be an awesome deal but certainly too good to be true! Keep us updated on the situation and for your sake I hope it's legit!
