FBDavis Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Hello Everyone, I am new to the forum so forgive me if this isn't in the right spot. However, I have a Shimano bait caster that I was given a year ago. Because of how busy I was this last year, I used it once (5 casts). Then, the reel started making a strange clicking sound. It is almost like it starts and stops, hitting some sort of part that causes the resistance. I am not super familiar with the parts terminology. However, I have taken the reel apart several times and cleaned, degreased, relubed, etc. The problem really only occurs when I close the case of the reel covering the centrifugal braking system. To be more clear, I will leave the side open exposing the brakes. This allows the spool to spin freely and feel very smooth. When I close and lock the case, problem reoccurs. I'm kinda stumped and really don't want to pay the $35 or whatever if it is simply a small alignment fix. I can take pictures or whatever as needed to help explain. I would appreciate any help I can get! Franky Quote

Super User *Hootie Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 Need a little more info such as, model # and series...(ie Chronarch 100B).. Tight Lines! Post title says, Curado 200G7. Hootie Quote
FBDavis Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Correct it is the Shimano Curado 200G7. I can give any other information needed. Just let me know. Quote
FBDavis Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Also, I removed the anti-reverse pawl (some posts said this causes problems). Nothing changed so I put it back in the correct position. I'm wondering if the spool itself is bent. This seems unlikely though because of the lack of use. I'm really just at a loss. Quote
FBDavis Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 I'd love any ideas guys. I have pinpointed the area of friction to be between the reel casing on the left side and the centrifugal weight system. I figured this out by detaching both and attempting to spin the spool in the disk on the inside of the left reel casing (proper name?). This caused the exact same friction pattern. Any ideas how to fix this? Quote

I figured this out by detaching both and attempting to spin the spool in the disk on the inside of the left reel casing (proper name?). This caused the exact same friction pattern. Any ideas how to fix this? Does the reel have centrifical braks on metal posts? (Like the early ones did). I would take a close look at the brake race (brass ring on palming side plate) for grooves and any damaged brake blocks. If you see them and the brake blocks sit on a metal post I'll bet that the post is lose and on casting is forceing it against the race and causing a rub..When you crank the pin is still rubbing. Won't hurt to check... Just my .02¢ Tight Lines! Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Does it make this noise when reeling only? When you disengage the spool into freespool, and spin the spool does it make the noise still? Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 It might even be the bearing in the sideplate that detaches... I have heard of similar cases where a bearing is "shot" and makes noises. Quote
Loop_Dad Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Is the spacer behind the bearing on the side plate in place? It is very thin one almost like a paper. Quote
FBDavis Posted January 6, 2014 Author Posted January 6, 2014 Hey guys….so here's the deal. I had reached my limit with trying to diagnose my reel. I tried one last time to just take it apart and try to find where the friction was coming from. Somehow, this fixed it. I really appreciate the comments above. However, I'm not really sure exactly how I fixed it. But man am I glad I did! The reel feels good as new. I think .RM. was pretty close to diagnosing the problem because I made a slight bend to the little contraption that holds the brakes. Thanks to all who replied and I look forward to learning a lot on this forum. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Good call .RM. Congrats on fixing the reel FBDavis! Quote

Jonnehboi Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 your spool may be chipped or bent somewhere either on the spool or on the stem of the spool eother way I know it can be hard to want to put in the money but its best to have it checked by a professional just open the reel Manuel and you will see that there are hundreds of itty bitty parts that are essential for full function of the reel. If I were you I would get it checked out so you don't have to end up buying a new reel. Quote
