VABasser Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Fellas, Anybody have a recommendation for a local Hampton Roads tackle shop that does a great job cleaning reels? I used to break them down and clean them myself but just don't have the time to anymore. I've sent them off to DVT before and they do a great job, but shipping and insurance gets expensive. I haven't lived in the Virginia Beach area very long, and so not really sure what the area has to offer. Any insight would be appreciated Quote

Any insight would be appreciated I know that BPS will clean reels, but I don't know the quality of repair. Obviously DVT has a great reputation. Bishop's down in lower Yorktown (above rte 64, on route 17) builds his own rods, and I'm pretty sure repairs/cleans reels as well. He's done splendid rod repairs for me. Vast majority of his work is for salt water gear, but he easily handles freshwater as well. Also believe Grafton Fishing Supply repairs/tunes reels. Last time I was there I noticed a sign that they clean/repair reels. They're further up route 17 just below the Denbigh Blvd crossing (across from the Farm Fresh). Also predominately salt water, but does both. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 And there's Wilcox Bait and Tackle in Newport News. They do a ton of fishing, I rarely go there, but the've got a good reputation as far as I know. As for reel repairs, when I check their web site "repairs" were for hunting gear.... Quote
edfitzvb Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 It depends on the model of your reel(s). Call Oceans East on Northampton Boulevard in Virginia Beach. They have a guy that cleans/repairs reel. He did a fine job on a couple of Lew's reels that I left for him. Rates were reasonable, work competent, and the folks are really nice there. Good sized tackle shop, half fresh half salt and lots of knowledge. I have known the owner since he had a tiny shop 30 years ago. He is around for the long haul. Give them a call and see if they work on your models. If you live on the Peninsula I would think that BPS would be more convenient, but if you're South Side, I can recommend Oceans East. Quote
VABasser Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Thanks guys I'll give a couple of those shops a call. I've got Shimanos, Lews and Ardent so a little bit of everything Quote
