Hey guys, so my girlfriend accidentally dropped my brand new Revo stx 3 Reel and rod yesterday in the water for maybe 2 seconds, so my reel and the cork of my rod had a little dunk in the lake. Is the reel okay and is there anything I should do to it to prevent any issues? Also is the cork okay? Thanks! This is my first expensive set up so I'm a little overly cautious.

You are fine. I have spent many hours fishing in the rain with several rigs on deck. Consider it a baptism. Now go and fish some more... :eyebrows:

Probably useless now. send them to me. I'll even pay shipping. Just kidding. You're probably fine. I've dipped a reel or two in the water and not had any issues.

...and I believe some of the reel manufactures recommend you to wash your reel after use.

I never dropped reel in the water, but I dropped camera when I was taking fish pic. It did not survive.

personally I would break the reel down soak the bearings in acetone or some other kind of solvent, remove the old grease and re-lube and oil. better safe than sorry, the rod is fine.

From what I have read, you should rinse it down in clean water. That said, my abu garcia silver max has been submerged ~6 times with no special care taken afterwards and it still works just fine.

When I got my first baitcaster a few years ago, one of my first trips out with it(while still learning) the rod slipped out of my hand during a cast and I literally threw the rod and reel into the lake. I waded out and found it and brought it back in. I didn't clean it after, just kept using it. Now it makes a bit of a grinding sound when retrieving, sounds like a bearing has some dirt in it or something. Still works good, casts great.

I guess my point is you should probably clean it.

I have one spinning reel that I've dunked a few times when wade fishing.  Haven't had it apart yet but it's fine, just feels like it needs some grease in the gear teeth.

service it twice a year and don't worry about it in the meantime. If it soaked in a muddy river or it took a while to get it out, maybe tear down blow it dry and relube, if any mud or sand got in it flush it and do as said..

The water isn't the problem, it's possible grit and sand.  Fishing in the rain is not the same as having a reel dunked.  I have yet to service a freshwater spinning reel, they've never been dunked.

Saltwater reels stay pretty healthy too if they haven't been dunked.  On a spinning reel only the bail gets wet from the line, I don't always rinse them down unless there is salt air blowing around or they get splashed.  Those reels get serviced only when they need them.

You want to prevent issues?? Dump the girlfriend. Send the reel to Delaware valley tackle to get it cleaned; that should help too.

SirSnook is right that it is not the water that is the concern. Unless the water is really dirty or it landed in the mud I would not worry about it. Giving it a quick clean and lube or sending it to Mike at DVT are reasonable alternatives. It will undoubtedly work smoother than new if sent to Mike. I would just fish it and have it serviced when necessary.

A 2 second dunk won't do anything to the reel....:Victory:

You would only need attention if the reel laid on lake bottom for a period of time......

If your worried about it and know how then service the reel, otherwise fish it and when needed service the reel...

Good Luck & Tight Lines!  :fishing1:

Don't break the reel down if you don't what your doing. 2 seconds probably didn't hurt anything unless it landed in loose sand or mud.
