MrTexasRigs Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Alright so I was removing the shields from my side-plate bearing on my quantum. I don't know how it happened, but the little clip that holds the shield in flew somewhere, and I can't find it. So is it alright to just use the bearing w/o a shield on one side, and if so which way would u face the open side, towards the spool or towards the side-plate. I'm guessing facing away from the spool. Thanks Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 It's fine to use it without the shield, if it were mine I would remove the other side as well. Quote

Super User Scott F Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 It's fine to use it without the shield, if it were mine I would remove the other side as well. The shields keep the grease in and the dirt out. I can't see how removing the other shield is going to be a benefit. Can you tell me why you'd remove it? Quote

Can you tell me why you'd remove it? First I would never use grease in a spool bearing, the bearing will be easier to oil, and easier to flush if it does get contaminated, it also reduces the hydraulic tension caused by oil against the shield and the balls and cage of the bearing. ABEC 7 orange seal ceramics are almost always run with the seals removed, no difference here. This is how I prefer to run my bearings, the only down side that I have noticed Is that they are slightly louder without the shields/seals. 1 Quote
Hogsticker Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Is it a shield or a clip? I'm sure you can get a replacement from an online Quantum dealer. If you run them unshielded which is fine, just make sure you remove them and clean them more often Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 If you have a BPS near by, talk to the manager in the fishing department. They probably have a dozen reels in the back room that have been returned. They might let you have the part you need. 1 Quote

Capt.Bob Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Once removed, I keep them that way, as said already, hurts absolutely nothing, and make cleaning and servicing easier, as for orange seals yes it is recommended once removed to leave them off, but they are a totally different material. Unless a customer request they be replaced after servicing, they go in the spare parts bin or trash. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Cores came with open bearings. Won't hurt a thing and often done intentionally as stated above. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Is it bad to have the shields off on one side but not the other? Is there any balance issues or something? Quote
