Super User iabass8 Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 Anybody have any good/bad to say about it? Being sick on the couch gets boring so I start buying stuff. With the recent billing/system upgrade debacle at US cellular they gave us 10,000 free belief points. Coincidentally, that's what the iphone5 costs so it's on its way to me for free. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 I just picked up the 5s about a month ago and no complaints here. the fingerprint ID is pretty cool and the larger screen is nice. I also like that they got rid of the glass on the back of the phone which should help durability. At the same time, i never had any problems with any of y iPhones as far as durability goes. I am always amazed at how something that looks so fragile really isn't. Overall, not a huge difference for me going from the 4s to the 5s but i like it. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 I got disappointed with the iphone offerings so I switched over to the galaxy family. I liked my iphone4 a lot but the upgrade from the 4 to 4s to the 5c/s are a joke compared to the competition. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 Best phone ever made. Period! 1 Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 Cons. Its an Apple product. The screen is tiny. PIA to change operating systems on it. Pros. Everyone and their dog sells accessories for them. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 Pros= IT WORKS By that I mean it doesn't have to be powered on and off and it's not dog slow... Cons= Fragile!!!!!!!!!! I'm on my third, one went for a swim in the hot tub and the other one fell out of the truck on a gravel road face down and I stepped on it! BTW, the one that went swimming for SEVERAL minutes I took apart and dried it out and it worked fine but the camera never worked again. I actually think I may have done that taking it apart... Get a Lifeproof "Nuud" case! Quote

Super User tomustang Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 Pros: user interface=anyone can use it, screen display is the best, app network has everything., overall the phone was more durable than I expected (I dropped it alot, only used a slip cover case) Cons; user interface=not customizable, really dependent on itunes, had issues connecting to open wifi networks, small screen that you don't realize how small it is until you see other people looking at their iphones Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 My wife has the 4 (I hate it, if it was my first iPhone o would have gone back to Android) she had it fall off a 30" handrail in into the grass and the screen broke. Quote

Now that's not right! I've dropped my phone from arm height and never had anything happen to the glass, through all my times dropping it (and it was hundreds) I've got some of pixel burnouts or whatever you call them Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 Trust me 3 of us watched it happen, it landed on a pice of gravel under the grass. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 iPhone 5 is an excellent smartphone. Add to it a nice waterproof case like a Lifeproof nuud or fre and you'll be safe. There are other, good waterproof cases though, just mentioning the Lifeproof since I own one. I have much invested in the Apple platform as for games and apps, the platform of which, in my experience really does work best (used to be an Android user). So I have not switched back to Android, although I've eyed the larger screen phones. But I'll wait for Apple to release a large-screen iPhone later this year (hopefully). The iPhone 5 series (and 4) are perfect for single hand operation. But if you have hands the size of LeBron James, then you should be able to operate the massive Galaxy Note with one hand. To each his/her own. Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 So why does everyone say user interface is not customizable for iPhones? I am curious as to what you want to do that you can't and you don't even need iTunes anymore to have an iPhone. Quote

It's one of the reasons why you can have apps control your androids with more customization, whereas apple needs to approve everything and apple don't want you to change their stuff.Downside is the increased security holes Quote

Play around with different operating systems. ios and android are not the only two systems out there. Also its sometimes nice to run an older veraion of an operating system. Plus it is easier to tweak android then it is ios. Removing bloatware and unwanted programs. Various other little things. Now if I could get my hands on another iphone. Jailbreak it and install android I would be all about that. I dont need a phone manufacture telling me what I can and can't do with a device I purchased from them. Once I have purchased said device I should be able to uninstall any and everything I dont want on said device. Thats my major beef with Apple. Aside from the tiny little screens. Not all of us have dainty little hands. Quote

Super User Darren. Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 Android is "open" source...kindof and not really totally, entirely open... http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/10/googles-iron-grip-on-android-controlling-open-source-by-any-means-necessary/ Fragmentation hurts Android more than iOS because every Android phone manufacturer can tweak/customize the source to their delight. Break the Android grip via something like Cyanogenmod (awesome), you break warranty (assuming you're in contract). Likewise with jailbreaking iPhone. As well, say you have an HTC phone on Verizon... Google releases new version of Android, but your HTC on Verizon won't see new version IF and UNTIL HTC has tested it, and then Verizon has to test it to make sure it will maintain user experience on their network. The only way around it is to opt for a Google Nexus phone which will get updates as Google releases them. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 I wear a size xxl gloves and don't have any problems fat fingering my iPhone. And as far as the phone size they still fit in my pocket good but if you are going to use it for an extended period of time I'll get my ipad. Nothing's perfect Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 The only problem I have had was the top button , it quit working , insurance on the phone is not cheap but if you have an issue it gets replaced , no problems . Quote

They are great Google systems which are reasons why android is a good. Besides those are apps not the operating system Quote
Super User South FLA Posted January 5, 2014 Super User Posted January 5, 2014 I've owned Apple iPhones since the second generation and have the 5, I finally think the competition has caught up with Apple and is superior in many ways, but since I am entrenched with iTunes, Apps, etc I cannot see myself jumping platforms to the Android devices. If I were in the market for a new phone I would get a Samsung Galaxy 4. My one major complaint on the new iPhone 5 is battery life as a power user. Quote

Not all of us have dainty little hands. Then what the point of even getting an iPhone? iOS is the biggest reason why I have it... Apple keeps their stuff closed for a reason. I have more software issues with open source stuff vs. closed source. Maybe that just my experience... My battery last awhile, I haven't met an android phone to do any better.. It all how you manage background app. For those of you with an iPhone complaining of battery, try this: Setting>General>Background App Refresh> At this point you can see what apps being refreshed constantly in the background, you can manage them or turn it all off. My is completely turned off. Also, I periodically double tape the home button and swipe up to turn off app that been used recently. Doing this has kept my battery going awhile. Quote
