Nibbles Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Does anyone know whether any big lure companies still produce decently priced balsa cranks? As much as I'd love to support custom luremakers, I doubt I'll be able to continue dropping anywhere from 15-25 bucks per crankbait at the rate I lose them. I shore fish a lot with cranks, so lure retrievers don't always work. So far I've managed to find the Bomber model B's and the Strike King shad series. Quote
tholmes Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 There's quite a few. http://www.basspro.com/Rapala-DT-%28DivesTo%29-Fat-Series-Crankbaits/product/98346/-1537089 http://www.basspro.com/Norman-Lures-Professional-Edge-Baits-Fat-Boy/product/61263/-1540008 http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-XPS-Balsa-Boogie-Crankbait/product/42768/-1114598 There's three that are reasonably priced. I'm sure there are more out there. Tom Quote
Ern Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 I still got a box of Bagley's. Off topic but read a thing last night on the Bagley being sold in Japan. Also said the DB 3 mag was made for shore fishing in japan. Quote
Vinny Chase Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 DT FAT!!! If there are any Gander Mountains in your vicinity you should head there on BF, fats are going to be $2.99! Quote
Nick Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Surfing ebay, I just bought 2 handmade new squarebills for 8.00, no tax or shipping fees. I'll let you know the quality of these $4 balsa baits. Some fellow out of Florida is selling them, and I bit on it. Quote
Nibbles Posted November 24, 2010 Author Posted November 24, 2010 I always thought that the Norman Fatboys were touted to emulate balsa, but weren't actually made of balsa? Quote

The only problem is we have a foot of snow and the roads are a sheet of ice. Appreciate it! And yeah, the weather this year has been dismal. We had freezing rain today and the black ice caused all sorts of mayhem. Must have passed 7 or 8 wrecks on my way to get groceries today. Quote
Blue Streak Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 Bagley still makes some nice balsa baits at a fair price. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 Rapala is the brand easiest to find, and they are pretty hard to beat. The DT series is a board favorite. Bomber makes some pretty good square lip baits, Gander Mountain had them in the $3 bargin bin recently. Bagleys are all over ebay, but hard to find in a store these days. There is a guy on ebay that sells his own hand made cranks called Catching Concepts. They are cedar cranks, but just as good as anything out there in my opinion. Quote
repper Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 Rapala! TW has them on sale now i believe. they normally sell them for 6.99 i think, so @ 20% off they're a great deal imho Quote
repper Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 i was referring to the Rapala DT series, my favorite. Quote
Blue Streak Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 There ya go Thanks for posting that link. Like most old baits I don't think the new version is quite as good as the originals, but Bagley balsa baits are about as good as any you can buy and they do produce and you can't beat the quality for the price. Just look at those finishes. They are still my number one balsa choice. Quote
