Smallmouth Hunter Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I just got a used Daiwa lexa in and it has an issue. Whenever I spin the handle really fast, then stop it, the spool continues to spin for a moment, (During which this time, it makes a very horrible grinding noise) then it seems to re-engage with the handle. I have only done it two or three times because I am scared something bad will happen if I do it too much. I have it down to two possible problems, just not sure which of the two it is: 1. the spool pin is slipping out of the slots in the pinion gear. 2. the pinion gear is slipping out of the slots in the main gear. The pinion gear appears to be in good shape and same with the main gear, so I am thinking it is something in the clutch mechanism. I cleaned out the main gear and pinion gear then regreased 1/3 of the teeth on the main gear so it is definitely not over-greased. One thing to note that I found odd: The gears came completely dry aside from a tad bit of grease in the pinion gear. Maybe the previous owner found this problem as well, and decided that the grease was causing it to slip, but then later found that this was not the case. I didn't have a chance to spin the handle when I first got it because the first thing I did was break it open and clean/re-grease everything. Tell me what you all think. How can this be fixed?? Super User J Francho Posted January 3, 2014 Super User Posted January 3, 2014 Nothing to fix, they are designed to do that. It's a fail safe for the main gear. Nothing in a normal fishing situation will ever duplicate that. Other reel brands will do the same thing. One thing, do it too much, and you'll wear the engagement slots in the pinion. 2 Quote
Fishwhittler Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Open up the gearbox, remove the two pinion-yoke springs, then carefully stretch them enough until they stay roughly 1/16" longer than they were before. The problem you're experiencing happens when the pinion-yoke springs lose some springiness due to being constantly under pressure. Stretching them out restores the lost spring power. 1 Quote

I will give this a go. I think you all are right about it being a built in feature to the reel because it works perfectly fine other than this slight "safety feature" which can only occur if you are messing around with the reel. This doesn't happen when retrieving it normally at all. I'll give an update tomorrow. Quote

cddan Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Don't know if this will help but I recently was asked to look at a quantum for a friend. It was fairly new but for some reason he took it apart. I found that he had put it together wrong. The first drag washer was backwards. It looked like it should be the way he had it but it was backwards as per the reel diagram that came with the reel. It had similar symptoms to yours. You might want to carefully exam the reel while looking at a parts diagram. If you don't have one you can find it online. good luck. Quote
cddan Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 It wouldn't hurt to send them an email. The reel companies usually respond in a day or two. They can also direct you to a diagram link as well as a simple search will.I also know daiwas can be a little tricky when putting the spool back in. Make sure it goes together easily not forced.Grease on drags can also have an adverse effect if it's not the right kind. Better leaving dry(clean) Quote

I just had this happen to me today when cleaning my Daiwa fuego. Unfortunately, one of the springs somehow came off and got mangled in the gears. Will call Daiwa and see if they can help. Quote
