Shimano Handle Back Play

Why can't Shimano bait casters clean up their act and get rid of the annoying back play in their handles? I've put Bocas and a bearing supported carbon fiber handle on my Chronatch and although it's a great reel, that slop in the handle drives me up a wall.

Slop? My three don't have any slop.  Maybe take it back.  Not sure that any spool bearing upgrade or handle is gonna fix it.

If someone can post a video of this "back play"? If the drag is loosened on some of my shimanos you can turn the handle backwards maybe half a millimeter, and you have to really look for it to notice, but when the drag is tightened up that disappears. Same goes for my ABUs. Is that the back play you are referring to?

I have slight back play on my Curado 300 DSV. I've tried everything to fix it but never been able to.  The reel still performs great. The only nuisance is when you have your lure up on the holder it never stays tight. None of my other 6 Shimano baitcasters have any play at all.

 Humm seems to me proper lubrication also stops and or reduces corrosion. Hard to make something bullet proof, all bearings require lubrication as does anything running metal on metal. Proper lubrication as I said will reduce corrosion. Not sure the selection of bearing is only for that reason. Any bearing with a tighter tolerance will cost more. I believe that also comes into play on bearing selection along with life expectancy. I have upgraded bearings on all my Shimano Reels and have not experienced corrosion issues but then again I properly lubricate with a good quality oil.

Let me clear that up a little. A typical Diawa reel has no backplay in the handle at all nor do any of my Revo's but my Shimanos do. I know that changing bearings and handles has no effect on this I just like to tune up all my reels. It has to be the anti reverse bearing they use and my point is it annoys me in a quality reel. A couple of higher end Okumas I've played with have the same issue. I'm not trying to make this a "this company is better" thing as I've always spread the wealth around pretty evenly. Hey J Francho, I asked you awhile ago about the td-x. Hsdl-hvla reels. Got 2 off the Bay for less than $30 each and tuned em up. Nice

Just read the post about Shimanos roller bearings have some play built in and that explains it. I just feel like it cheapens the feel of a great reel

Daiwas have what I call the "Daiwa gap" lol.. When you tighten the drag, it creates a noticeable gap between the handle and drag star. You can even see a millimeter or 2 of the handle shaft. Too me it looks cheap. Does it affect the performance? Apparently it doesn't. Shimano design is so that the star is flush with the handle at all times. Daiwa appears to be changing their design to have a lot of shimano like elements with the tatula. Abu/lews have the gap too. I don't think the back play affects performance and neither does the "gap".
