Super User Fishing Rhino Posted January 3, 2014 Super User Posted January 3, 2014 We got totally prepared for anything the "blizzard" could throw at us. I hooked up the plow Thursday morning. I hooked up the generator in the garage for the inevitable loss of power. We ran the dishwasher. My wife got all the laundry done. We had food for days. We got two big buckets of ice melt at BJ's Wholesale Club. Then we relaxed and saved our energy for every crisis which Hercules would throw at us, snow, wind, cold, you name it. Well, we got the snow, the wind, and the cold. We did not lose electricity. No trees were toppled. I spent about 45 minutes scraping the snow from our driveway. That was it. Preparation, it's like insurance, most of the time you don't use it. Still, there is always a modicum of security from both preparation and insurance. You're always better off to have it, and not need to use it. Hercules? Should have been named Pansy. Quote

I knocked that much off the hood of the truck this morning after shoveling and blowing two feet of snow last night. BAU up here by the lake. 1 Quote

By the time the worst of winter was over the snow that got shoveled from the driveway was over six feet high. Quote

We wound up having about 14" - 16" and those estimates are from the news outlets, I can't really tell with all the snow drifting, but I'd say 14" is pretty accurate, how about you? Quote

More than likely they're crying about the parking situation more than anything. I've been working in Boston for the past couple of months and it really is a challenge to park in there. Thankfully I only have to go in 1 more time to apply for an occupancy permit and then I'm out for a while. Quote

The only people out were essential positions, like hospital workers, etc. Exactly why they cry, the only parking for folks who have condos and apartments in Boston is on the street, when the Mayor declares a snow emergency they have to move their cars to parking garages. My project was across from City Hall and parking was $27/day for the early bird special (before 8:00) am and $36/day after 8:00 am. I 'm not sure if they get any type of discount during snow emergencies because the majority of those garages are owned by private entities. Quote
nick76 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 We got 10" here in my neck of the woods (Michigan) the past two days. All light and fluffy stuff. Awoke this morning to -18° without wind chill. -25° with wind chill. This was all after getting 8-10 inches the week before Christmas, then having a quick two day melt off and an ice storm the Saturday and Sunday before Christmas. Lost power for 5 days and then this all hit. Has been a heck of a winter so far. Quote

I shoveled mine for 45minutes when I got back from hunting. About a hour later the neighbor knocked on the door and said to move my truck her husband will clear it out with loader. He plowed the drive way the whole front yard all the way to the door then dumped it across the street in the field. Wasted my time shoveling for nothing other then exercise i guess lol. Quote

The last blizzard that did that around here was the Blizzard of '78, 36 years ago. The equipment is much more powerful and efficient be it plows or spreaders. Stores may close as a result of a storm, but that facilitates quicker removal of snow from parking lots. It's a breeze without cars in a lot. Back in the day stores could be closed for three or four days, so folks stocked up on the basics, bread, milk and eggs. With today's all wheel, or four wheel drive vehicles being so common, a few inches of snow on the roads is a small obstacle. The old habits die hard. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 ugh. It's supposed to be a high of -13 this coming monday through tuesday morning /w lows around -25. windchills can be as severe as -50/-60. I can't remember ever having -10 be the norm in the morning here. Quote
