Line For Cranking Rod

Waiting for February 28 to get a BPS Spring Sale deal on a Crankin' Stick...I only use smaller crankbaits, like 3/8 to 5/8, so I will use a 6.3:1 reel...leaning towards a 7 foot medium rod...so, what line (type and strength) should I put on this and could I use it for other applications?  I mainly fish from a boat if that affects your responses, and I have a few other rod setups for other things...just wondering if any other applications may work with this set up well.

10 or 12lb flouro would be ideal.  I personally use 10lb Yo-Zuri hybrid for that application. Some folks crank with 20lb braid with good success. Lots of options.

I use 15 lb test on square bills because I fish them around a lot of rocks. As for deeper diving cranks 10lb and a low gear ratio reel will get you max depth. Straight fluorocarbon btw. For cranks I like Invisx because of it's stretch.

^{For small cranks I like to use 12lb fluorocarbon. All my fluorocarbon is Seagaur Red Line but Yo-Zuri Hybrid would probably be what you want to put on in 12#. It is more of a diverse line that works well with cranks and other type bait you might throw with that combo.}

I use 20lb braid. I add a fluoro leader, usually 12 or 15lb for shallow or lipless cranks, and 10 or 12lb for deep cranks.

I use 10 or 12# Tatsu or 8 or 10# P-Line CXX.

I prefer a Mono for stretch on any treble hook application. I use Trilene Big Game either in 12 or 15 lb depending on cover. This is the toughest Mono I found and cheap so respooling is not am issue.

shallow cranks 12-15 lb floro.

medium cranks 10-12 lb floro or 30 lb braid with a 3-4 foot 20 lb floro leader. 

deep cranks 10-12 lb floro ( if you need to get down deep use the lightest line you can get away with)

 

in murky water braid works just fine as long as you have a glass rod, also if i am not around wood i often use mono of the yozuri hybrid.

Depending on what depth you would like to hit with the crankbaits you will be using you can choose to use either a smaller diameter line of a larger diameter line. For example, If you are throwing a Rapala DT10 you can get it to go a bit deeper if you downsize your line and go to 8lb test or you can make it run shallower by going up to 12 or 14 lb test. I throw a crankbait all year round here in NY and I have been using Sunline Super Sniper FC for the last 3 seasons with much success. I would recommend buying a few different brands and experiment with different line sizes as well. I fish heavily pressured lakes so I am typically using between 8 to 12 lb test for all of my crankbaits. The type of rod you buy will also be a major factor in your success with crankbaits. I use 832 Sufix on everything, if the BPS rod has a true Moderate action, and little to gain with the stretch of mono, and in my opinion quite the contrary. Since I went with the Moderate action crank rods from St. Croix I think they are at their best with Sufix braid, 20lbs test on the MM and run 30 lbs. test on the MHM. I use 4' to 12' fluoro or mono leaders on every rod I own depending the conditions and tactic at the time.

I use to use mono for cranks, but now I use a Co-Poly/Hybrid strictly - Yo Zuri or P-Line, it is really up to you which you like better.

I use 10 or 12# Tatsu or 8 or 10# P-Line CXX.

x2 on the 8-10# CXX. Much stronger than its rated strength and very abrasion resistant. I use it for all my moving baits.

Getting ready to spool some 10lb flouro (Seagaur Red) on my newly acquired St. Croix 7' cranking rod.  The tightwad in me is regretting not buying 12lb (less risk), but deep down, I know that lighter is better.
