Megastink Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Timmy Horton and several other Elite level pros are starting a new tackle company. Baits will be designed by the pros (a common theme nowadays) but the difference is that they will offer a DIRECT price from the factory, bypassing wholesale markup. This idea kinda makes me scratch my head and wonder how they're gonna accomplish this and still be profitable. Unless their baits WOULD retail for $20, and they can sell direct for $10-$15. Anyway, interesting stuff. Stay tuned! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 if you sell baits or anythign direct from the manufacturer you can still make plenty of money at wholesale prices otherwise they would be out of business. The retail store makes the money on the mark up from wholesale to retail. Kind of like car dealerships still make money on a car sold at "invoice" but the salesman doesn't unless there is a spiff or soemthing else going on. When i worked in the outdoor retail industry we would get pro deals from every company which was usually wholesale minus 30% aka what it cost them to produce the product. Quote

Megastink Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 I wonder how their sponsor's feel about this...... Quote
Uncle Leo Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I wonder how their sponsor's feel about this...... Maybe they invested in their venture? Quote
Megastink Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 Maybe they invested in their venture? Maybe... The company will have needs for hardbaits, skirted and soft baits. I DOUBT they have, or are willing to raise, the capital for building a factory... therefor, I assume that they will have a need for other manufacturers to make the baits for them. Quote

I believe it would be beneficial for the baits to have the Pros name on them, you know how us fisherman are, LOL. For that reason alone I would think they would want involvement, but who knows. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 This will definitely be interesting. The first thing I thought of is their sponsors as well. The baits are the key. Can't wait to see what they offer and how they will differentiate them from their sponsors.. Quote
Grantman83 Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Good for them. I know hard baits are a different story but look at what john crews has been able to do. His missle baits company now has a following, pro staff and has shown continued expansion of baits. Furthermore, he is his own title sponsor and soft plastic sponsor. Several pros have been able to start their own rod companies as well. I look at it like this, if companies are going to make money off pro designed lures, rods etc then why shouldn't the pros just do exactly what these guys are doing and create and sell them themselves? Startup costs may be tough but just like rods, I'm sure they can find a factory or company which can produce what they need. Quote
CKFishin Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Its like Avon, Mary K, thirty one, pampered chef and so on for men the way I understand it... 1 Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 They'll have backing from an un-named, established company. The whole point of the business is to make money and both the pro and the "silent partner" will do just that. It's better to make 10% of something than 100% of nothing. 4 Quote
Grantman83 Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Gotta give Boyd duckett credit....that guy knows how to branch out. I mean he has his hand in what seems like is every new business venture involving the pros lol. MLF, Rods/reels and now this.. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 Its like Avon, Mary K, thirty one, pampered chef and so on for men the way I understand it... Instead of the Mary Kay pink cadillac we could get a Pink Bass Boat ?! Quote
teamshrink Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Instead of "parties," they should have little tournaments. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 It's like Avon, Mary K, thirty one, pampered chef and so on for men the way I understand it... They're going to have "fishermen" sell the baits to other fishermen. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 Instead of the Mary Kay pink cadillac we could get a Pink Bass Boat ?! There already is a pro with a pink boat Quote
BassMan_Kyle Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 The brand is called profound outdoors and Timmy Horton is the creator of it. I do look forward to seeing what is released and if they don't mark up the baits like other companies you can bet if they're good baits then my boat will be full of them. Goodbye lucky craft, spro, megabass, sebile etc. Quote
camovan Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 The bait company part sounds great. The distribution method sounds horrible. Supposedly the site is launching tomorrow so it will be interesting to see how they present it. If it is no minimum order and geared towards the end user I would be pleasantly surprised. If it is geared towards getting people to buy a briefcase of gear and hawk it at the docks I imagine it will be a short lived venture. Some ideas are better left in the 70's. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 Maybe I'll push my local tackle shop to look at getting their lures from them. Their markups now are a bit hefty and their selection is mediocre. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 Having a pros name attatched to a product isnt really a driving force behind my purchases could actually be a hindrance. Dont have a clue who Timmy Horton is. Quote

I got home from work and my wife actually told me about this because she saw a post on Facebook about it (I liked TImmy Horton's page).... married a good 'un! Quote
ChrisAW Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Meh.. Looking at what is available now, and the prices... 9$ for 2 jigs? Nah, I'm good. http://profoundoutdoors.com/index.aspx Quote
SudburyBasser Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Thank heavens...I was worried there weren't enough tackle companies out there. 2 Quote

Nah, I'm good. http://profoundoutdoors.com/index.aspx thought the same thing. you get almost 3 jigs for that price from Sieberts Outdoors that are probably of the same, if not better, quality. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted January 4, 2014 Super User Posted January 4, 2014 Online sales, and eliminating or reducing middlemen is the current trend in retail. What they should do is license the KVD name and count their money. I'm sure guys would buy KVD doggie poop... Quote
