MrTexasRigs Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I'm looking to get more into crankbaits. I don't necessarily want to spend a ton of money on one. I have an Abu Veritas 7' med, with a med-fast taper, but it feels pretty stiff, so I don't know. Though I won't skimp on the reel, it'll probably be a BB1. So was looking at Bass Pro's crankin sticks. I was wondering how well these actually work for regular med-deep diving crankbaits. They are labeled as fast action, which I was a little confused, and I would think it would be better to have a more whippy tip to throw cranks? I also looked at the W&M Skeet Tessera S glass, but I wasn't sure. I know the crankin sticks go on sale. So do they basically have a cranking stick for any application, like sq. bills through deep divers? Thanks Quote
kylek Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I have heard nothing but great reviews of the BPS crankin rod. It will probably be the next one I buy for deeper diving crankbaits. I would get the 7' Medium rod to throw shallow divers and square bills. For the deep divers the 7'6" MH looks like a pretty good choice. I don't think the rating of fast action really means alot on these. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 Action and power have no set standards in the fishing industry. Don't read into so much. Quote
GaterB Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Have you ever held one of the Crankin Sticks in person? All of the ones I've held at BassPro have a very soft, flexible tip. Like rippin-lips said, "fast" action is a relative term, and i've noticed that this changes from one brand to another as well as for different types of rods within the same brand. For the most part I think a crankbait rod's action is going to be slower than rods meant for other techniques. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 2, 2014 Global Moderator Posted January 2, 2014 I've owned a couple of their cranking sticks and they're very nice rods for the money. For a good all around cranking rod I'd go with the 7' MH. That will handle squarebills to something like a Strike King Series 5 very well. If you're wanting something for even deeper running baits I'd suggest getting 2 different rods. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 If you haven't yet, check out this recent thread about cranking rods: Looking For A Crankbait Rod Under $100 This thread mentions the BPS Crankin' Stick and includes discussion related to factors to consider when selecting a rod. This thread also mentions some other brand cranking rods that might be options, some of which are currently on sale. Regarding Crankin' Sticks...I have a few: 6' ML, 7' ML, 7'M, 7'6"M, and 7'6"MH. All different tools for different purposes. They offer good value at the regular price and excellent value at the sale price. There is a Crankin' Stick model to handle nearly any cranking chore up to 1.5 ounce baits. On the BPS action ratings for these rods, their "fast" fishes like a moderate, their "extra-fast" fishes like a moderate to moderate-fast. These are true cranking rods. If I were to pick ONE Stick to start with, it would be the 7'M. It is my most used Crankin' Stick (it's the middle rod on the photo - check out the cork ) and I use it for the 3/8oz to 5/8oz range and it will handle 3/4oz well enough if you need to stretch it. If you want to use 3/4oz to 1.5 ounce baits routinely, you should consider the MH power rod. Good rods, they work - catch fish Six pounder brought in on a Crankin' Stick. 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 The BPS cranking stick is rated fast because it is fast but it isn't an all graphite rod, it is a composite meaning they use fiberglass as well as graphite in the construction. Fiberglass rods are funny with the ratings , some manufactures list the action is moderate on fiberglass models while some will list the taper, so a composite rod with a fast taper is still going to have a parabolic bend or flex, the same with the extra fast. So I was a little confused seeing fast/x-fast. I'm used to all graphite rod actions. Just one thing I know that I'm not a big fan of is that stupid "power hump" grip. Quote
Primus Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 These are a terrific rod for the money. I use the 7' Medium with 12 lb floro for general crankbait fishing Traps, 1.5 squarebills, Wiggle Wart and similar baits. I spool the 7' MH with 17 lb mono for large squarebills and wake Cranks like the one that Xcalibur used to make. I fish the 7'6" MH with 12 lb Floro and use this for heavy 1 oz plus trap style baits and deep diving cranks and even though the rod is rated to 1-1/2 oz I have had no trouble casting and retrieving a 2 oz Strike King 10XD which exceeds the rod's listed rating though I tend to lob this bait more. Even though these rods are listed as fast action to me it's more flexible on the tip than what that designation normally implies. Quote
