Strange Thought But I Was Curious

While out shoveling snow once again today I began to wonder how many of my friends in the south even own snow shovels?

 

I personally have 3 different types:

 

The Pusher - Which I use like a mini snow plow.

The Scooper - Which I use when the snow is to wet and heavy to push.

The Scraper - Which is my flatter metal one that I use to scrape the stuff that's really packed on my driveway.

 

lol So now you know what I do and think when our lakes are frozen and I can't Bass fish.

My old crappy snowblower blew its final blow a few years back and I have been running a shovel since.   This year I treated myself to a new one though.

Lol. I don't have one anymore. Had my grandfathers for years. But it got to where every time I moved it was something else to move that never got used. So I threw it away. It only accumulates a few inches once a year at the most lately. And it will melt the next day if u just leave it there. I've always just left it there anyway. If you pile it up it will stay there for week and looks bad. Never could figure out why people do that. I shoveled my grandmothers but not ours. I salt or throw sand on it if it turns to ice.

My father in law bought a snow plow truck a couple of years ago to add to his fleet of equipment. Used it one time that year to push off a couple of local parking lots. It never moved last year. He is hoping to sell it this winter. Lol.

It's funny because if you look in any elderly persons garage here, they will have a snow shovel of some sort maybe two. But it just doesn't snow anymore like it used to. I only remember getting 6 inches twice and 8 once in my life time. Used to get about three snows a winter that would add up to an inch or two average.

It sucks to.

Il loan you some sunshine for some snow. If it's going to be cold I want it to snow. Love to see everything covered in at least four inches. Twice a winter at least. Gives me reason to stay home from work and play with the kids.

I'm hoping by posting this I get my four inches tonight. There calling for a dusting tonight.

We got another 4" or so today. On top of what we already had so everything in sight is covered in snow which is pretty to look at.

 

I don't mind the snow but the crazy cold temperatures are what I hate.

 

Tomorrow night our low (without the wind chill factored in) is supposed to be -18. They are calling

for highs around the 1 degree mark from Friday until the end of next week and lows below 0 every

night.

 

Our winters generally last until March (sometimes much later). I remember about 12 years ago getting 12" of

snow in April. That really sucks because by then all I want to do is catch bass.

How far south does it snow?

As we brace ourselves for blizzard number two I repaired two antique lamps for the wife today. When it's snowing tomorrow I'll be doing more inside fixes. I don't operate shovels anymore. The last time I shoveled snow was in the blizzard of '78. After that I purchased machines to do it. I went looking for a snowblower and came home with a '55 jeep with a 4 way plow. Moving levers is as hard as it gets for me.

As I hear the blizzard and heavy snow warnings moving south is an option for sure. I can afford to live anywhere in the world I want too. But my problem is my misses won't go. I just dream about fishing all year round. With the single digits approaching us by the weekends I'll be hugging the woodstove for sure. While cleaning my tackle room of course. Dreaming about making that first cast in a few months. Bill

Oh I forgot something. We are gonna get a good snow this winter. My 4x4 truck tires are so bawled they look like slicks instead of all terrain. Lol.

The warming Earth traps more moisture in the atmosphere which can cause more severe snowstorms, extreme storms in other seasons as well.  Polar caps shrinking and the oceans rising, doesn't heat melt ice?

Me too. I add The Broom for sweeping snow off of and away from my west-facing front door before one of my kids opens it and lets in a small avalanche.  These winters can suck but they keep the whiners out.

Snow is a four letter word that starts with an s. One of the reasons I am in Florida is snow. I lived in a snow belt in Michigan. Normal for us was 15' of snow a winter. It was not unusual for the first snow (that stayed on the ground) to come in September and one year the drifts didn't melt until the 15th of May.

Two springs in a row, I was hunting morel mushrooms on Mother's day and got caught in a blizzard.

And, of course along with the snow was the temperature drop. 40 below zero at night and warming up to a high 20 below for the day. Sounds unreal but it was true.

These forecasts of a foot of snow and zero weather are not real impressive. That was a normal spring day.

I had a snow shovel and a snow blower and I normally used the snow blower on the 1/8th mile driveway at least twice a week.

I don't have a snow shovel, anymore, and I have never yet had to shovel the first shovel full of sunshine and I like it that way.

Not a problem for me.  Winter is the time I get stuff done around the house.  This year, I'm replacing all the carpeting in the upstairs bedrooms with pre-finished hardwood flooring.  Should have it done before we head to Daytona Beach for speedweeks.  I get to fish whenever I want during the warmer months as a trade off.  Another upside is that the fuel bills for my truck are about a hundred dollars per week less, which also pleases my wife.  It takes me four or five days per room because I like a perimeter pattern in hardwood flooring.  I also change the patterns slightly by using different color woods.  It takes more time and care, but my labor is free, and we enjoy the finished product.

 

 

 

The dining room picture below which I also did was done in the 1970s with the photo taken about thirty years later.  It was not a prefinished floor.  I rented a floor sander to even out the strips.  Then smoothed it with an oscillating sander to get rid of the sanding grooves.

JT I just cleaned up about 2" using a broom. Not quite enough to get a shovel! We are going to have temps more like the ones you are used to in the northern part of the state over the next week or so. I'll take a little snow any day over below zero temps.

 

Rhino you are are a man who pays close attention to detail.   I respect that, although my focus has a tendency to wonder when meticulous attention is required for very long. We all have our strengths and weaknesses I suppose...

This was my ride into work.  The snow doesn't bother me, but other drivers do. Even when it rains people freak out like their cars are going to just spin out like crazy. I also think it's stupid how the people around here who have lived their entire lives get shockingly surprised when we get a big snow fall. It happens.......every.........year.

I picked a good year to buy my snow blower.  One decent storb before Christmas and now I am in the midst of another one.  Expected between 6-10 inches today and into tomorrow.

 

Spring can't get here soon enough!
