mattk22 Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I want o start to throw swim jigs. Help me learn more about them. What's your favorite brand, weight, and trailer to use with it? And what water conditions and temps do you find they produce the best? Quote
AMAC Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I want o start to throw swim jigs. Help me learn more about them. What's your favorite brand, weight, and trailer to use with it? I like Strike Kings swimming jig due to head shape and having eyes on the actual jig. In particular the hack attack swim jig that has a stout heavy wire hook. Which is what you want when throwing them on braid. Here lately I have been swimming hack attack heavy cover jig as a swim jig when I need something a little heavier than 3/8 oz And what water conditions and temps do you find they produce the best? I like the water clear to stained. 3 ft visibility or less is plenty for because of where and how I fish it. I have been experimenting more with it this winter but on the bladed jig has been producing. I usually start throwing it when fish are hard core pre spawn and are starting to move shallow. Quote

kylek Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I have an assortment of Siebert's swim jigs that I plan on using this year. One of the colors is posted above and the other color is a bluegill color. I plan on using the Berkley Subwoofer and some type of crawdad bait for trailers. I have not picked out the colors yet. Super User Montanaro Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 3/8 revenge swim jigs work year round I use missile twin turbos and swimsenkos trimmed down. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 A good place to start might be to understand where the swimjig was started and what it actually was in the beginning. Most of the jigs that we call swimjigs now are truly more of a pitching type jig that has been modified to swim also. There are stark contrasts to some of the originals. A good place to start your search in by reading about Brovarny jigs as many believe they were one of the originals.. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 Siebert 3/8 swim jig in Bluegill. Trailer varies from rage craws, Grass Pigs, to basic chunks. Usually in a green pumpkin red flake, candy craw or sapphire. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 This guy, http://siebertoutdoors.com/Siebert-Tournament-Swim-Jig-022.htm Shameless self-promotion! But I like it. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 1/4oz Brovarney swim jig in Blue Crab has been my favorite for years. 1 Quote
Zach P Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I'm a big fan of a 3/8 oz Dirty Jig swimjig, great color selection, fantastic durability, and I've caught a ton of fish on them 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 Siebert Outdoors 3/8 oz Elite NorthStar 3/8 oz Original Swim Jig Trailers are Rage Tail Menace and Shellcracker Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 shell cracker always seemed too bulky on 3/8 for my tastes Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 1/4oz Brovarney swim jig in Blue Crab has been my favorite for years. I like this jig also, nice thin weedguard,, 30 degree hook, and a thinner skirt. This is what I think of when someone says swimjig. What trailer do you usually use? Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 I have had good luck with the Bass Assault swimjig, I like these two colors in particular Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted January 1, 2014 Super User Posted January 1, 2014 These are a few that I have made recently for fishing different lakes in my area, they fall more into the pitching/swimming jig. Quote
Fish'N Impossible Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Here in Ohio most of our water is shallow so everything is light weight. As an overall favorite I would say Pepper Custom Jigs, any color that matches the footage of your area. I only use one trailer on all my swim jigs, in my opinion the best action on any trailer is the 3.6 JP Hammer shad on my light swim jigs , and the 4.8 Hammer shad on heavier ones. Trailer matching the jig skirt.hope that helps or atleast offers a starting point. Quote
JCiurej34 Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I like a 3/8 oz Dirty Jigs Swim Jig because of their vast and detailed color selection. I like 3/8 oz because I can use it in a variety of depths and I can make long casts with it. My favorite trailers for swim jigs are Rage Craws, grubs, or Lake Fork Magic Shads depending on how active the fish are. For trailers, I tend to go with a grub in cooler water or when the fish aren't super active, a craw when their somewhat active or in the later stages of the prespawn period, and I use a swimbait trailer when the water is warmer during the summer months or when the fish are feeding. However, if one trailer is not working I will experiment with other trailers and retrieve styles until I start catching fish. Quote

This is what I think of when someone says swimjig. What trailer do you usually use? For that specific jig I use an alabama craw colored subwoofer or the amber colored rage craw if the waters a little dirty. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I prefer the Dirty Jigs No Jack Swim Jigs in 3/8 and 1/2 oz. I use several different colors as well as trailers. One of the more effective trailers for my area is the NetBait Kickin' B and Kickin' B chunk. This time of year we get lots of rain so the lake is pretty stained so I usually go black and blue with a whole Kickin' B as a trailer. I don't trim it any because I want the biggest profile I can get so it moves more water and helps the fish locate it in the very stained water. In the warmer months when the water's more clear I usually use a shad colored bait with a Swing Impact Fat trailer. Bream and Bluegill colors work then as well. 1/2oz Threadfin Shad no jack Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 I like your picks Avery! And the trailers choices are good and very similar to mine especially the Keitech fat impact and swim senkos. I also really like the menace grub and little dipper as well for trailers choices. As far as my picks I fish vast aray of colors, styles, and sizes but if I had to pick a top 5 it would be the following in no specific order: 1. Northstar original swim jig - in new gill or GP/blue 2. Dirty jigs finesse swimjig - in dill gill 3. Siebert elite swimjig - in fry 4. Northstar flip and swim - Okeechobee craw and simply water melon 5. Revenge swim jig - in bluegill Quote
