Looking At New Fish Finders Hd Or Bigger Screen

Looking at different fish finders to add to my console, I have gotta get my console fish finder upgraded, right now i just have an old school 2d. I want SI for sure.

 

Have to opportunity to maybe purchase an HB 898c HD or a 998c (from what i have read exactly the same on these two units just HD and bigger screen) or should I just keep looking around. Which got me to thinking, bigger screen? or HD? Im still young enough my eyes aren't' getting bad yet (30) ha

 

Those that can draw the comparison let me know what you think helps more when looking at the SI. My first thought gimmie HD for a clearer definition.

 

Then someone just posted above that the 798 HD are onsale/closeout for $650 at gander, granted its only a 5" screen but i have one on my bow and like it other than at times i wish it was bigger, but sometimes a deal is a deal and with it on my console staring me right in the face i dont feel it would be to bad.

 

or Sway me to Lowrance side, we just gotta keep it reasonable lets say keep at or preferably below $1k.

I have been researching finders also. After comparing a bunch and looking to keep the cost within reason I'm going with the Lowrance Elite5 HD with chart plotter at Bass Pro for $499.

Ive got the 798 on the bow and wish it had a larger screen since it is mounted by my feet. I would use the 798 at the helm and get the larger screen for the bow. Im doing this as my next upgrade.

Good point I feel like the 798 at the console since it's close to my face would work great

The HD is much easier to see in the sunlight. The 998 HD's are under $1200. I've got the non HD 998 on the console. Imaging can be difficult to see in the bright sunlight. All the other screens are not affected by the sun.

The HD in that 898 Humminbird model only means it has LED backlighting and the other one without HD has CCFL backlighing. The model number is the screen size. 800 series is 7" diagonal and 900 series is 8" diagonal.

 

HD has nothing to do with image quality unless it is the 700 or 500 series which have the highest pixel density in the industry.

But in the case of the 798 ci HD SI, the HD just means it is Ethernet capable--that's it, nothing else.

The earlier models of the 798, (798c SI and 798ci SI) have the exact same display and backlighing, but are not Ethernet capable.

 

The most important thing with either Side Imaging or Structure Scan is screen width. Get the biggest you can afford.

That is because image size is determined by the range setting which you adjust. Image sizes with regular sonar and Down Imaging/Down Scan is determined by the depth.

 

Basically HD is just two letters of the alphabet that may or may not have any reference to what you think High Definition is. BQ, AZ, MR, KX, ect could be used instead of HD

Wow that was some serious knowledge drop. Seems like HD on fish finders is a little miss leading. I'd thought it meant better resolution like on TVs.
