Oak Grove Lake Park, Chesapeake, Va

Has anyone fished Oak Grove Lake in Chesapeake, VA? Happened to spot it on google maps looking for directions to a place in Chesapeake and it caught my attention.

I hadn't either until I was on google maps checking some directions. It is not far from Chesapeake regional medical center. So I was curious if anyone knew anything about it.

l've only been here in Hampton Roads area for a little over a year. I know about the lakes in & around the Suffolk area, fished Trashmore one time, but I don't know much about any other ponds or lakes. 

 

I bought a bass boat last year & spent the majority of my fishing time on the Chowan after I got the boat.

 

I'm wanting to do some exploring this year, especially some of the rivers in the area like James, Chickihominy, North West, etc... I wish the Nansemond was fresh water because that would only be about a 5 min drive from my house to the ramp.

No idea, sorry to say. I only fish the Peninsula side of Hampton Roads.

 

Lots of folks here who fish the South Side who could, possibly, give you some insight to that body of water.

FWIW, did a quick Google of the  site and it looks like a little "gem" of a small lake.

Though from 2009, still sounds like a potentially great fishery.

 

I'd say visit and see what diamonds lay beneath the waves!

I may see about it later in the spring. Im with you on the peninsula area so until the weather warms up that drive aint worth it for me

It is a great lake. I live 5 minutes from there. I have seen quite a few lunkers from the docks just grazing on top of the grass beds. Prob is, not kayaks, no tubes, no boats. So the decks and shore are your only choices. Another problem is getting them to BITE. But if you do, there area many good size fish. you enter from Byron street off of Volvo pkwy. you can either turn left into the main paking area for the park, walk down the trail and you are there, or take Byron all the way down and enter from down there. BETTER HAVE AN UPDATED LICENSE!!!

I don't have a kayak or boat or anything so bank fishing is how I spend 99% of my fishing time. I always keep my freshwater license up to date, but im guessing the check a lot? Definitely sounds like somewhere I may visit in the spring

I recently moved to the Chesapeake area and this lake is about 1/2 mile from my work. Looking forward to see what others' successes have been here. Would love to leave work and cast for an hour.

I've fished it since it was open to the public.  It used to be great as nobody ever fished there.  My son and I would walk over from the house and hit if for a couple of hours at a shot.  However, when the city improved the area around the lake (path/workout stations/playground, etc.), that increased the traffic and the amount of fishing pressure.  In my opinion, the lake really took a dive.  As mentioned, there are still some nice fish there, just very tough to catch them.  My best luck has been throwing out as far away as possible from shore.  Also, get there very early and beat the crowds and be as stealthy as possible.  I bet it would fish completely different at night, but the park closes as sunset.
